Job loss leads to artistic success After being laid off from her job in the printing business, Manchester resident Lynda Elliott had a whole lot of time on her hands. Since she had worked with printing film and photography, she started playing around with her camera, taking pictures for fun. Now, at age 37, this New Hampshire native has gone from an out-of-work printer, to a full-time graphic artist/professional photographer. Originally hailing from Chocrua, Elliott attended school at the New Hampshire Technical College and majored in graphic arts. She then began a 12-year stint working as a cameraman and journeyman stripper before her layoff in 2000. Elliott mainly focuses on abstract pictures, finding inspiration in whatever daily things she can find. “Sometimes things just jump out, or I have to make myself stay in the present moment and pay attention to details,” Elliott said. “I try not to close my mind to new ideas no matter how ridiculous they may seem.” Elliott has most recently gained prestige with four nominations at the Black and White Spider Awards, one of the world’s largest programs honoring black-and-white photography. Elliott was nominated in the “Abstract” category for her photos “Untitled 1,” “Untitled 2” and “Daily Reflections,” and the “Still Life” category for the photo “Until Spring.” “It was so great, completely unexpected,” Elliott said. “When you get rejected from local galleries but get recognition from a program like this you feel so much better about your work.” In the past year, Elliott opted to try her hand at abstract acrylic paintings and has also regained her passion for playing the violin. Elliott said she hopes to one day become a full-time photographer and make a living out of what she loves to do the most.
