Monastery Artists open
new show The group, formed by Jaime Grady and Aaron Slater in 2005, has done several shows around Manchester. Their latest show, “Words on a Flier,” opened Saturday, Feb. 25, in the mill building at 21 W. Auburn St. The event drew a solid crowd, in spite of the snowy weather. The presentation included Monastery Artists, poetry readings from Spoken Word Productions and music courtesy of DJ Justin Bailey from 4Front Records/ Bridge St. Café. The theme of the show was communication, using the power of art to express thoughts and feelings. There was even a video camera installed so that viewers could make their own tapes to interact with the artists and ask questions and make comments about pieces. Each artist seemed to have a different idea that he wanted to portray through his art. Some of the ideas were clearly manifested and others were clear and obvious showings of talent. The top floor of the Manchester Mills on West Auburn Street was a fitting place to have the down-to-earth and laid-back opening. The gallery featured works from 10 local artists of mixed media including many oil paintings. A theme that ran in many of the artists’ biographies, posted under each section of work, was the need to break free. Each artist did seem to break free, at least from the cultural norms of aesthetic art, to create abstract and completely unique pieces of artwork.
The gallery proved extremely thought-provoking, each work forcing the
viewer to really think in order to find the true meaning. Each artist
conveyed his ideas wonderfully through the often difficult world of
