Pinings: Live a little

Dear Pinings,
When I go on vacation, I like to stay in nice places. My sister, who I travel with, likes to spend less money on the hotel room and more on doing things while we are there. We are planning a summer trip now and she has us booked into a place that looks like a rat-hole, once again. A few years back we stayed in a place that was so run down and in such a bad part of town, I was afraid the whole time we were there. When I told other people where we were staying, they were horrified. My sister tells me to lighten up and live a little. She laughs at me when I tell her that I don?t want to be held up at knifepoint while vacationing.

Well, I hope you don?t want to be held up at knifepoint at home either.
Seriously, you should really consider making your own vacation plans or traveling with a friend in the future. Your sister might be fun to be with, but you clearly have different priorities when it comes to travel. Tell her you?d like the opportunity to make the arrangements for the two of you and see what happens. Tell her that you will keep her budget considerations in mind but that you will both benefit by staying in clean, safe lodging. If she balks, tell her that you are seriously considering going on vacation solo or with another friend for your next trip. And then do it.
