In-house artists on display The Derryfield School’s Lyceum Gallery is featuring the art of two of its own. Music teacher Rob Fogg III and Director of Communications Annie Branch are both photographers. Fogg is presenting color digital prints and Branch is displaying black-and-white prints from negatives. The Lyceum Gallery is usually home to outside professional artists. But these photographers are a part of the Derryfield community. “When I was introduced to the work Rob and Annie are creating, I was immediately inspired to hang a show of their contrasting efforts,” said Andy Moerlein, Lyceum Gallery director. “I saw a clear point of view and a personal vision expressed in the photographs they captured. I also knew that most students did not know the depth and quality of Ms. Branch and Mr. Fogg’s out-of-school investment. Presenting this work is an adventure of discovery for the entire school.” Branch is showing black-and-white photographs using a traditional film camera. She works as a freelance photographer, took photographs for the Boston-based band Dispatch, and shoots sports and events in her role as director of communications, as well as capturing personal images of her family. Her photographs are full of playful angles and interesting subjects. The pictures on display are spirited portraits shot in a variety of circumstances. The subjects in her photographs were not staged in a studio, but rather, captured in their element. The members of Dispatch are seen cavorting outdoors and creating music on stage. The personalities of her other portraits emanate from the composition and setting of the photograph. Branch’s photography is a spirited and individual take on a traditional medium. Fogg has been taking pictures for five years and most of the photos on display were taken with an Olympus C700UZ digital camera. The subject of Fogg’s work is found art, in the visual sense. His works vary from cityscapes, to pictures of melting ice, to birds on a beach. What connects these photographs is Fogg’s sense of beauty and the moment. He captures ordinary visual scenes as art. “I’ve always been one to stop what I’m doing and notice the beauty around me,” Fogg said. “It wasn’t until I received a digital camera for my birthday that I started trying to capture that beauty. What followed was a progression of occasionally stopping for random photo opportunities, to ultimately dedicating time and energy to collect images.” Photographs by Fogg III and Branch will be on display through May 12 at The Derryfield School’s Lyceum Gallery, 2108 River Road, Manchester. The Derryfield School will host a reception for the artists Friday, May 5, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., prior to the spring concert at 7:00 p.m. The Derryfield School campus includes a sculpture garden as well as the Lyceum Gallery.
