Art helps kids at MAA show

• Art for a cause: The Manchester Artists Association has its philanthropist hat on this weekend. The group is holding a two-day outdoor art show with exhibits also inside the lobby and MAA Gallery at 1528 Elm St., Manchester. The artists’ entry fees as well as a percentage of their sales will benefit the children and families of “The Make A Wish Foundation.” Check out the show between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
• Wave of the future: Be one of the first to see work of up and coming artists. See the thesis exhibitions of the University of New Hampshire’s Master of Fine Arts students. The Art Gallery at the Paul Creative Arts Center at UNH, 30 College Road, Durham, will show work by MFA candidates Andrea Hagy and Eun-Shin Kim May 10 through 20, with a reception May 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. Hagy is inspired by Dutch genre painters and “grounded in observation in particular [of] the psychological qualities of light,” while Kim’s choice are landscapes because “places alone can attain quiet, undisturbed grace,” according to their artists’ statements.
• Polka, everybody: Travel to the Eastern Bloc via Lowell, Mass., tonight. Destination World returns, showcasing Poland. Get down to Gary Sredzienski, the “Accordian Warrior,” at 5:30 p.m. at the Lowell Five Main Stage, 491 Dutton St. Screen Revenge (Zemsta) at 7:30 p.m., a costume comedy featuring Polanski’s return to film, or check out other film, art, dance and food – kielbasa and pierogi will be available. • DIY art shows in Hollis: The DreamFarm in Hollis is inviting neighbors and friends to enjoy music and art in a renovated barn each month. Painter Mary Buergin will be featured at the May 7 event, starting at 6:30 p.m.; that event also showcases Brazilian vocal jazz group Receipa de Samba and jazz singer-songwriter Julie Lavender. Why DIY? You need to bring your own dessert and wine. You also need to call 465-7997 or e-mail jhicks@nhhomes.com for your reservation because space is limited. They like donations.
