A message to mom Yellow Taxi Productions is back this weekend with a nod to both the area?s strong French-Canadian roots and the influence a mother can have. For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again by Michel Tremblay is the playwright?s tribute to his mother. Though she didn?t live to see him reach success in theater, she helped his creativity blossom during their time together. Yellow Taxi Productions was founded by Suzanne Delle in 2002 to bring professional dramatic theater to New Hampshire audiences, as well as new scripts and contemporary off-Broadway. Delle said Yellow Taxi was looking for a French book to use as a prop in a local store, mentioned Tremblay, and ?the people got very excited ... so I believe he is known,? she said. ?The characters are French-Canadian ... they talk about streets, people, places of Quebec,? Delle said. People who are familiar with the area might enjoy the references, she said. His scripts are known for having quintessentially French-Canadian dialog. Even with the English translation, Delle said, the Canadian ?eh? that ends statements is written into the script. ?It is very much of that place,? she said. Andrew Hannah of New Ipswich plays the playwright who has broken the script into five vignettes of conversations with his mother when he was 10, 13, 16, 18 and 20. ?Andrew very much physicalizes the changes. He?s doing a really nice job with his body language,? Delle said, and to the add to the challenge of an adult playing those young ages, the script has him sitting in a chair for the entire play. The play was written in the early ?90s, after Tremblay had been famous for a while. He ?decided to sort of got back to his roots, and write this story about his mother,? who had passed away from cancer before his first play was performed in Canada, Delle said. Maria Barry, winner of a 2005 NH Theatre Award in for Best Community Theatre Actress, plays the mother. ?When I read it, I thought, yeah, it?s so specific to the mother-child relationship, it just seemed so appropriate,? Delle said. For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again will be performed at the Hunt Memorial Building, 6 Main St., Nashua on May 12 and 13 at 8 p.m. and May 13 and 14 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 from Theatermania.com, cityartsnashua.org or at the Hunt an hour before showtime. |
