Local Color • Gallery hopping by the sea: Art Round Town, Portsmouth’s monthly art gallery event, returns Friday, Aug. 11, 5 to 8 p.m. The aptly named annual estuary group show at The N.W. Barrett, 53 Market St., Portsmouth, includes pieces from Don Gorvett, whose work was recently purchased by the Currier Museum. Darlou Gam’s romantic landscapes will be featured at Family Tree Fine Art & Furnishings, 23 Ceres St., while Alfredo Lorenzo’s abstract landscapes open at TaraPeck Gallery/Studio at 39 Ceres St. An anything-goes kind of show is at the New Hampshire Art Association’s Levy Gallery, 136 State St., while photographers Karen and Dick Hudnall show “Through the Eye of the Beholder” in the Levy’s East Gallery. Visit artroundtown.org for a map. • An island and its admirers: Alexandra deSteiguer, winter Isle of Shoals caretaker, is exhibiting her photographs at Nahcotta during Art Round Town Friday. “Island Light, Isles of Shoals,” an exhibition and sale of historical and contemporary paintings of The Isles of Shoals at the Banks Gallery, 123 State St., Portsmouth, opens with a reception Sat., Aug. 19, 5 to 9 p.m. and runs through Sept. 3. The exhibit honors American Impressionist Childe Hassam (1859–1935) and his student Celia Thaxter and features work by Hassam. James Aponovich, Stapleton Kearns and many other famed painters inspired by Isles of Shoals and Hassam will be represented. A hardcover book, Isles of Shoals, Island Light series (thebluetree.com), will accompany the exhibit. • Art in a park: The Nashua Area Artists Association will roll out ist 52nd annual Art in the Park show at Greeley Park, Nashua, Saturday, Aug. 20, and Sunday, Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit greeleyparkartshow.com for details. The sprawling visual arts show is judged, and admission and parking are free for visitors. • Keeping arts in the schools: Bob’s Discount Furniture is pitching in for arts education with its Celebrate the Arts Contest. The company will sponsor a year of arts education at a middle or elementary school in each of the five states it does business in, which includes New Hampshire. “Increasingly every year, we are finding the fine arts programs and cultural arts events being the first target for budget cuts in many school districts. ... Bob’s Discount Furniture wants to help these ailing arts and culture programs while trying to raise the awareness about its importance in the school’s annual curriculum,” said Cathy Poulin, pubic relations director for Bob’s Discount Furniture.
