• Back at sea: Players Ring is back for the season starting with Sharp Dressed Men, by Dover’s Gregg Gaskell, opening Friday, Sept. 1. The comedy follows three brothers trying to prepare the perfect wedding for their parents. Gaskell, Ti Chase and Andrew Nowacki play the three brothers, with Andrew Fling directing. The script was first produced as a locally filmed motion picture. A reception follows and tickets are $24, or $20 for members or those who purchase membership that evening. The event is a fundraiser for the Players Ring and Sharp Dressed Productions. Sharp Dressed Men will also run Sept. 2 through Sept. 17 with shows Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 7 p.m., tickets $8-$12, playersring.org, 436-8123, 105 Marcy St., Portsmouth.
• Never enough of the bard: Merrimack’s youth theater, My Act, is presenting Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, the story of a girl named Viola who washes up on a strange island and tries to win the love of Duke Orsino although she spends much of the play disguised as a boy. See Twelfth Night at the Theatre by the Lake, Wasserman Park on Naticook Road, Merrimack, Sept. 8 or 9 at 7 p.m. Limited “tropical party” table seating is available. • Soft opening: New Yorkers attend the opening of their new play in Boston, and turn against each other when they fear that that the audience hated it, only to end up with favorable reviews, in Light Up The Sky. The comedy by Moss Hart runs at the Majestic Theatre, 281 Cartier St., Manchester, Sept. 8, 9, 15 and 16 at 8 p.m. and Sept. 17 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 to $12; call 669-7469, majestictheatre.net.
• Get your tickets now: Tickets for 2006-2007 shows at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord go on sale Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. to the general public. Cap Center members had a head start. Music includes Great Big Sea Oct. 15 and Ani DiFranco Nov. 9, as well as Ian Anderson playing Orchestral Jethro Tull Sept. 28. Theater highlights include Hairspray, Jesus Christ Superstar, Suessical the Musical and Edward Asner in The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial in April. The Moscow Festival Ballet will visit as well as the Ronald K. Brown/Evidence Dance Company. St. Paul’s School Ballet Company performs The Nutcracker Dec. 15.
