Getting recognition and recognizing nature

• Hidden talents: Manchester’s city employees were invited to enter their off-time artwork into a City of Manchester/National Arts Program competition this summer. Incentives were cash prizes from the National Arts Program Foundation, art scholarships by Currier Gallery of Art, E.W. Poore and New Hampshire Institute of Art and gift certificates from area businesses. Manchester’s Hillside Middle School teacher Marguerite A. Moore took People’s Choice award for her oil, “View from the Shore” and her work will hang at the Manchester City Library through Nov. 30. City staff art was shown at City Hall gallery in August. That space is now hosting Kathy Tangney’s watercolors on wood. Meet her Thursday, Sept. 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. during Manchester’s Open Doors free arts trolley tour, for which City Hall is a stop.
• Out by the farms: Check out “Nature Untouched,” a photo exhibit Sept. 23, 24, 30 and Oct. 1, from noon to 5 p.m. at Maple Hill Farm during Beaver Brook’s Fall Festival. “Nature Untouched” features Dan Brown of Hudson, who renders images in sharp detail. Plus, there’s cool stuff like live animals and live music. Beaver Brook is at 117 Ridge Road, Hollis, 465-7787, beaverbrook.org.
Following that up is the Hollis Fine Art Festival, first annual, Saturday, Oct. 14, at Nichols Field in Hollis, featuring 75 artists from New England and New York in several media.
• Names noted: Lots of area folks were recognized by the League of NH Craftsmen at the League’s Annual Craftsmen’s Fair in Newbury in August. The Blackstone Volunteer Recognition Award went to Cynthia H. Hunt of Concord for support to craftspeople and craft education and helping raise $60,000 in grant money. Living with Craft awards went to Sharon Dugan of Sanbornton for her “Pueblo Tapestry” basket, Wayne Marcoux of Manchester for a curly maple and bocote table, Tom McLaughlin and Jane Balshaw of Canterbury for “Signature Side Chairs,” Judith Copeland of Manchester for her “Snow Day” glass tray and Patricia Palson of Contoocook for “Coco Loco” ensemble. Craftwear awards went to Tom McGurrin of Sanbornton for “Quilted Cuff Bracelet,” Beth Lux of Bow for a child’s dress and bonnet and Christine Nordlund of Hillsborough.
• Keeping the past: New Hampshire State Council on the Arts awarded $8,000 for preserving Zimmerman House textiles to the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester. The home is the only residence in New England designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and open to the public.
