Pinings: The uncomfortable truth

Dear Pinings,
It’s getting to be that time of year when my kids start asking about Santa Claus. It’s still early in the season, but nowadays, the decorations and toys are in the stores before Halloween, for crying out loud!!!
This year, I want to tell them the truth about Santa. I’m tired of perpetuating the myth about the jolly old elf and the white beard and the magic sleigh. I don’t like lying to my children and I just want to level with them and move forward. My ex (their dad) says they are too young and part of being a kid is believing in magic and miracles and all of that. We haven’t fought about it really, but we aren’t on the same page. My kids are 7 and 11. Are they too young to know the truth?

I don’t know what you are referring to. What truth do you mean? What myth? Santa Claus is a jolly old elf. He comes on Christmas Eve and gives presents to all of the children in the world who have been good. He has a white beard and a big belly and a sleigh and reindeer. He is married to Mrs. Claus. He lives in the North Pole. He has a twinkle in his eye. He is the most amazing person who ever lived. Santa and Elvis, those are the two most amazing men who ever lived. Well, and Jay-Z … he’s pretty amazing too. I suppose you want some kind of truth about Jay-Z and Elvis too, huh?
Anyway, I don’t know what you mean about telling your kids the truth. I think they know the truth. I think you are in a lot of denial.
