Pinings: Nice to meet you

Dear Readers,
I’ve really enjoyed chatting with you this past year. I wanted to take this opportunity to say Happy Holidays and all of that stuff and let you know how much I enjoy this gig. A couple of weeks ago, I met a guy while I was making a visit to the local hospital (nope, I’m not sick). He came across the lobby, saying “Hey …I know you. I read your column in Hippo!” It was kind of surreal. I was going to have a test done (OK, OK, mammogram.You happy now?) and I was rushing (I’m allllllways late) and in the middle of a busy day at work (that would be any day of the week). I was not expecting to see anyone I know, so I’m sure I looked like a deer caught in the headlights. Anyway, it was nice to meet a Hippo fan.
Over the years that I’ve been writing this column, I’ve heard from high school classmates and former coworkers via e-mail who found me through Hippo. I’ve been stopped at stores and restaurants. It always puzzles me (how do they know who I am?) until I’m reminded that my picture is attached to my column every week. So you all know my mug. The weird part is that I don’t know you, so it feels, at first, a little strange when someone comes up to talk. I have to say though, it’s such a nice thing. I really love talking to you all and hearing from you. I don’t mean for this to sound like a “to my fans” kind of column, which would be … gross. But I want you to know that this is a very fun part of my life. And I hope you all enjoy the holiday season.
A few suggestions:
Don’t drink and drive.
Remember that you don’t have to go to every fight you are invited to.
Keep in mind that it’s more important to be kind than it is to be right.
It sucks to be in debt in January because you had too little self-control in December.
Try to do something nice for someone who is struggling in life right now.
