Pinings: Straight shooter
by Sherry Hughes sah103@hotmail.com
Dear Pinings,
One of my coworkers is convinced I’m gay, despite numerous protests by me. This bothers me a bit because I like to foster my masculine image. And I certainly don’t want people to think I’m a fairy. Can you help me out with how to sternly tell her I prefer to hold hands with honeys, dance with dames and frolic with Fanny?
Also, is it OK for me to tell her she has cute shoes?
Signed,
Looking for some straight advice
Dear Looking,
First of all, you can only tell her she has cute shoes if she is, in fact, wearing cute shoes.
Now, to the crux of your problem: You don’t tell me what leads this coworker to believe you are gay, or a fairy, as you so impolitely put it. Do you participate in activities that might be considered more feminine than masculine? Do you have flowers on your desk? Do you bake cakes? Are there lots of women in your life, none of whom you have sex with? If you answer yes to these questions, it doesn’t at all mean you are gay. But it does mean you are giving off a vibe that some people might think is … gay-friendly.
You are probably just a guy who is in touch with his feminine side. Sometimes that doesn’t make sense to people. And if you want to foster a masculine image, look closely at your actions and how they may be interpreted. Talk is cheap.
