Curtain calls
By Heidi Masek hmasek@hippopress.com

• Coming soon: john & jen by Andrew Lippa is a bit off the beaten path as musicals go. john & jen portrays complexities of family relationships in childhood, adolescence and adulthood using 1950 through 1990 as a tumultuous time frame. Jen’s brother John dies in Vietnam, and her son, named after John, faces a challenging adolescence. A. Robert Dionne and Amie White make up the cast of two. Phil Breton accompanies. This is the third and final dinner theater production from Majestic Theatre this season. Shows are March 30 and 31 at 7:30 p.m. and April 1 at 1:30 p.m. at 281 Cartier St., Manchester. Tickets include dinner and costs range from $24 to $27. Chef Matthew T. Morin cooks. Call 669-7469 or visit majestictheatre.net. Reservations are required.

For comedy, check out It’s Only A Play by Terrence McNally. A producer throws a party for opening night of a new Broadway play. But while the party rages, the play’s author, director, lead and assorted insiders are secluded upstairs waiting for reviews. Blame starts flying as the opinions roll in. Catherine Andruskevich directs this Bedford Off Broadway performance. See It’s Only a Play March 30, 31, April 6 or 7 at 8 p.m. at Bedford Old Town Hall, Meetinghouse Road. Tickets cost $10. Call 647-2864 or buy them at the door.

• What’s your function? Concerned that his son could remember rock lyrics, but not what he learned in school, advertising executive David McCall started working on a solution in the 1970s with his firm. From that came the three-minute gems known as “Schoolhouse Rock” that aired on ABC. Soon kids were grooving to “Conjunction Junction.” The concept was turned into a play in the 1990s in which the characters comfort a nervous new teacher. Actorsingers Jr. of Nashua are producing Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr. Friday, March 30, 7 p.m., Saturday, March 31 at 2 and 7 p.m., and Sunday, April 1 at 2 p.m. at 14 Court St. Theatre in Nashua. Mike Ryder directs with music direction from Jed Holland and choreography by Martha Daniels Holland. Kids between ages 8 and 13 make up the 51-person cast. Call 320-1870 for tickets.

• Talent scout in Nashua: Peter Sklar, who has scouted and worked with Mischa Barton, Reese Witherspoon and various other stars, will address youth and parents in his lecture “So You Want to be a Performer….” The free talk provides insight into the relationship between self-esteem, health and professional success. He also offers behind-the-scenes information about the causes of eating disorders, stage mothers, industry scams and the role of talent agents. Sklar will speak at Terpsichore Dance, 9 Merit Parkway, Nashua, Sunday, March 25 at 1 p.m. Minors must bring a parent; children under 6 cannot attend. Reserve space by calling 882-0011.Visit petersklaronline.com to learn more.

• Cirque Du Soleil descends: Verizon Wireless Arena just added a summer tour stop by this acrobatic performance art group with Montreal roots. “Delirium” is the first Cirque show with lyrics rather than an invented language in the music. See it Wednesday, June 27, or Thursday, June 28, at 7:30 p.m. Ticket costs range from $39.50 to $125.
