• Another network: The new Hollis Arts Society’s mission will be to promote and facilitate visual and performing arts for all ages and support and promote the arts in Hollis. • In the making: The Currier Art Center will show off work from students of all ages at Art Center Gallery, 180 Pearl St., Manchester, Thursday, March 22, from 5 to 8 p.m.
• Learn about the arts: Also at the Currier Art Center, take in a free lecture from Northwestern University professor Christopher Atkins Monday, March 19, from 6 to 7 p.m. He’ll talk about the bold “alla prima” painting techniques of Frans Hals, who revolutionized Dutch portrait painting during the 17th century, in “Style, Technique and the Art of Frans Hals.” Call 669-6144, ext. 122, for directions.
The Currier is bringing a show on the road Saturday, March 24, with a 1 p.m. presentation of “From Anonymous to Aponovich: New Hampshire History and Art” at the Derry Public Library, 64 East Broadway, 432-6140. The illustrated lecture from a Currier Museum of Art docent will go from the earliest artists in the area to contemporary New Hampshire artist James Aponovich, internationally recognized for his still-life paintings and landscapes. The program is part of the museum’s outreach efforts while the museum is closed for expansion for about 18 months. During the closure, the Derry Library’s Currier pass can be used for free admission to the Portland Museum of Art in Maine. Some Currier pieces are on display there.
• Open studios: The four ArtWalk Nashua events for 2007 are in the works. The open studios events will happen Saturdays, April 21, June 9, and Sept. 15, from 1 to 7 p.m. The last will coincide again with the Winter Holiday Stroll Nov. 24, but will end at 5 p.m. ArtWalk galleries and studios often offer live music, food or demonstrations. Many of the participants are housed in the Picker Building in the millyards or nearby.
