A Saint Paul student returns to show recent work

• Dragons and lace: Lise Lemeland has ties to Concord, because of high school. She went to Saint Paul’s. Then she earned a B.A. In English and French Literatures at Stanford University, as well as a BFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA in painting form Hunter College in New York City. Lemeland’s latest oil paintings, digital prints with gouache and glass tile pieces will be shown at Anderson-Soule Gallery this month.
She’s interested in challenging viewers’ notions of decoration as low art by using motifs usually seen in textiles, rugs or other objects.
“I am captivated by the worlds of color and pattern revealed in the decorative arts from other cultures,” Lemeland said. “Indian, Turkish, South and Central American carpets provide the structural foundation for the paintings. European lace and Chinese ornament are some of the sources of imagery and repetitive motifs and have become an integral part of the patterning in my most recent work.” Lemeland has also been experimenting with digital prints at Alfred University in New York, where she is now an assistant professor of painting.
Meet Lemeland Friday, April 13, between 5 and 7 p.m. at Anderson-Soule Gallery during the opening reception for “Lise Lemeland: New Works.” Lemeland will give a gallery talk, “Introduction to Ornament,” Saturday, April 14, at 11 a.m. The exhibit runs between April 12 and May 5.
• New community: Folks in Hollis are launching the “Hollis Arts Society” Thursday, April 5, at 7 p.m. at the Lawrence Barn in Hollis. It’s not limited to visual artists. It’s also for musicians and appreciators of the arts. The group will aim to create a supportive arts community and a regional platform for the visual arts, music, dance, drama, literary and therapeutic arts. Start at National Park Visitor Center, 246 Market St., for film, performance and art. On Tuesday, April 10, in Lowell, a motion-triggered video and sound installation at 119 Gallery, 119 Chelmsford St., (978) 452-8138, is open for viewing, part of the 2007 Boston Cyberarts Festival. Also April 10 is the start of the silent art auction at Daniel Webster College to benefit Souhegan Home & Hospice Care and Souhegan Valley Chamber of Commerce. Visit the school’s Collings Auditorium between 5 and 7:30 p.m. to meet some of the artists and see the work or view pieces at souhegan.net. In Manchester, stop by The Wine Studio, 53 Hooksett Road, 622-9463 to see Judy McLean’s watercolors and acrylics and taste wines Friday, April 6 between 5 and 8 p.m.
