Where to find that hearty breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but do you really want to have to make it?
While the smell of bacon crisping and French toast on the stove and a pour of maple syrup can’t be beat, sometimes you just want someone else to make it. Here is a round-up of some breakfast spots that offer the classics as well as some funkier stuff.
Breakfast all day
Sometimes breakfast is what you want for dinner.
Poor Boy’s Family Diner, 136 Rockingham Rd., Londonderry, 432-8990, serves hearty breakfasts, including NY sirloin with two eggs ($8.95) or prime rib with two eggs ($9.95), and biscuits and gravy with two eggs ($5.95). Also look for a prime rib and cheese omlette ($7.95), the Whimpy omlette ($6.95) made of a burger with cheese and onion, and a Hawaiian omelette ($5.95) made with pineapple, ham and cheese.
Retro eats in a cool retro building: Airport Diner, Brown Ave., Manchester, 623-5040, serves a day-long breakfast that includes a Philly steak omelette ($5.99), plus a Denver ($5.79) and Western ($4.89) and plain ole’ corn beef hash and eggs ($4.89).
Rita Mae’s, 280 North Main St. on Manchester’s West Side, 668-4077, serves breakfast starting at 6 a.m. Look for two eggs, sausage, biscuit and gravy ($4.25), kielbasa and cheese omelette ($6.25) or the Lisa Guyer ($6.25), a grilled English muffin topped with tomato, cheese and chicken tenders named for Mama Kicks’ front person.
You have probably driven by the queue of folks waiting outside for a table at Julien’s Corner Kitchen, 150 Bridge St., Manchester, 622-4044. Breakfast is served until 2 p.m. in this cozy eatery and includes a big selection of omletes, including Western, Eastern and Denver plus asparagus, portabella and cheese ($6.50), Florentine (45.95) and hash and cheese ($5.95).
Another spot to get breakfast all day, TJ’s Bagel & Eatery, 123 Nashua Rd., Londonderry 425-1114, opens at 6 a.m. and offers a selection of omelettes, plus a menu of Benedicts (two poached eggs on an English muffin, $6.25). Look for the traditional with grilled ham, the Florentine or the Southwest.
Tucked into a Hudson strip mall is Suzie’s Diner, 76 Lowell Rd., Hudson, 883-2741. All day the kitchen turns out dishes such as biscuits and gravy ($5.25), steak and eggs with homefries ($8.25) and a bowl of oatmeal ($1.85)
In Amherst, another retro eatery, Joey’s Diner, 1 Craftsman Lane, 577-8955, serves classic breakfast fare including eggs benedict ($6.75), stuffed French toast (45.49) and hash and eggs ($6.99). Also check out the Gen. MacArthur ($6.75) a hearty meal of chipped beef on toast with two eggs and home fries.
Finally, the Red Arrow, a Manchester institution at 61 Lowell St., 626-1118: breakfast is served 24 hours a day and includes everything from two eggs, panfries and toast ($2.55) to chocolate chip pancakes ($5.50) and steak tips with eggs and pan fries ($9.99). Local favorites include pork pie and eggs ($6.99) and corned beef hash with eggs ($5.50).
Break, fast
You like to sleep in and are a big fan of your snooze button? Fear not, eateries are offering up neatly packaged burritos and wraps that can be noshed behind the wheel.
For food on the run, Café 324, located at 324 Commercial St., Manchester, 666-5432, serves up easy-to-eat breakfast wraps starting at 7:30 a.m. Choices include wraps made with bacon, sausage, hash browns and pico de gallo (44.50) and grilled chicken, tomato and cheese ($4.25).
The Bridge Café, a favorite among local foodies, serves up these gorgeous, delicious muffins every morning in classic and funky flavor combos along with breakfast burritos (or sandwiches) in egg, cheese and potato ($3.25) and the “supremo” which is egg, cheese, meat potatoes and veggies ($4.75).
At the busy Crossroads Plaza in Londonderry, the Wrap Shak, 123 Nashua Road, 689-7125, serves breakfast wraps Monday through Saturday 7 to 11 a.m.and Sunday 8 to 11 a.m. Look for a baked egg and cheese ($3.29), baked steak, egg and cheese ($4.79) and a Greek wrap ($4.19) with eggs, spinach, feta and roasted red peppers.
Authentic Ethnic
Tenth Planet Café, 157 Amory St., Manchester, 621-9009. Bosnian food at this West Side eatery includes a comfort food breakfast sandwich of eggs, lamb and feta on a homemade pita and homemade Bosnian sausages.
Breakfast starts at 10 a.m. at El Mexicano Jr. Restaurant, 197 Wilson St., Manchester, 665-9299, and includes chorizo, eggs, rice and beans ($5.59), fried tortilla strip with beef and tomato sauce ($6.99) or burritos ($3.99) in chorzo, beef or vegetables. Also, there’s a menu of breakfast burritos ($3.99) in chorizo and egg, shredded meat, tomato and onion and pepper and eggs.
New kid on the block Village Cucina, 124 N. Main St., Concord, 410-3077, serves Italian and European eats that soothe the soul. The ripieno pane al latte ($4.50) is an Italian toast stuffed with chocolate-hazelnut mascarpone and raspberries and drizzled with raspberry coulis and crusted in pecans. Savory treats include omlettes made with cheese like smoked gouda and havarti and a breakfast panini ($3.50).
Authentic dim sum is savory and at times sweet, Chinese breakfast treats. Locally it is availble at North Garden, 715 Mast Rd., Manchester, 668-1668, or South Garden, 559 DW Highway Merrimack, 429-4289. Served Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Not served off strolling carts like in urban Chinatowns, it is still authentic. Look for fried taro turnovers ($2.10 for three), turnip cakes ($2.10 for three), steamed buns ($2.10 for three) in barbecue pork, chicken or mashed lotus nuts.
Classic breakfast
A made in New Hampshire breakfast at Blake’s, in Milford at 222 Elm St., 673-6300, or at 353 South Main St. in Manchester, 669-0220. The Taste of NH ($8.49) includes locally smoked bacon and sausage, Littleton Grist Mill whole wheat pancakes with NH maple syrup, eggs and local jam.
Jewell & the Beanstalk, 733 Somerville St., Manchester, 624-3709, serves up funky breakfast eats. Look for a variety of scrambles, including a tofu and veggie ($7.50) and crabmeat, basil and mushroom ($7.95). There is a daily selection of quiche, mixed berry French toast ($7.95) and a beanstalk poach ($7.50) served on onion dill toast with cheddar, spinach and tomato.
Route 28 Roadhouse 4 Sanborn Rd., Londonderry, 425-7553. A selection of omlettes, includes a signature roadhouse omlette ($6.95) of roast beef, onions, mushroom and cheese and the meat lovers ($7.25) roast beef, ham, bacon, sausage, pepperoni and cheese. Home fries are served “super” with Monterey Jack, cheddar and crisp bacon ($2.50) and there is a variety of pancakes and French toast.
In Bedford, Karen’s Kitchen, 170 Rte 101, 637-1326, serves up breakfast during the week from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on the weekends from 6 a.m. to noon. The menu has a selection of skillets (all $8.25) and omlettes, including a bacon, tomato and cheese ($6.50) and a Greek ($6.50). Look also for stuffed French toast ($5.50) and blueberry pancakes ($5).
