Teenage expression through art; Chad LaMarsh plays Open Doors

• What students aren’t saying: The Allstate Music and Allstate Jazz Festival were so popular that an Allstate Art Festival was added nine years ago. It was hosted at Currier Art Center this month in partnership with the NH Institute of Art and art educators. High school juniors submitted and were interviewed about a portfolio of recent work inspired by a Georgia O’Keefe quote, “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way — things I had no words for.” About 60 were chosen from more than 100 applicants to work with professional artists for two days at the festival. The portfolio submissions are on display at the Lyceum Gallery and Currier Downtown through May 16. Meet the young artists at Derryfield School’s Lyceum Gallery on Friday, April 20, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., 2108 River Road, Manchester, 669-4524. Currier Downtown is at 52 Hanover St.
• Bring your own trolley: The sixth year of the Open Doors cultural event in Manchester starts Thursday, April 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. More than 5,000 people attended the four 2006 events. The Chad LaMarsh Band is gracing Manchester Community Access Media, 540 N. Commercial St., during Open Doors. Norman Rockwell’s pencil drawings commissioned by Mass Mutual for the Saturday Evening Post will be displayed there, sponsored by “Wealth Wise” TV host Dennis Tsakiris and Mass Mutual. The Millyard LEGO Project is now complete at the SEE Science Center, 200 Bedford St. Meet the mayor at City Hall, 1 City Hall Plaza, Elm Street and view work by Laurie Doucette, Carolyn Marquis and Andrew Ntapalis. A group show of 12 artists’ work is at the Manchester Artists Association Gallery, 1528 Elm St. See the Art Allstate student work at Currier Downtown. “Curiosities” are on display at the Millyard Museum, 225 Commercial St. Gallery artists show who influenced them at Art 3 Gallery, 44 West Brook St. View “First Light: Photographs by Carl Austin Hyatt” at NHIA, 148 Concord and 156 Hanover streets. Lynn Pauley’s “Village d’Auvillar” series is at Franco American Centre, 52 Concord St. Visit several studios at Langer Place, 55 S. Commercial St., including East Colony Fine Arts, Hatfield Gallery, Dovetailed Kitchens and Full Spectrum Wellness. Sadly, there is no free trolley for this event.
