• Summer’s beginnings: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare’s light-hearted comedy, involves fairies, fairies messing with pairs of lovers, and a play within a play. Manchester’s 10-year-old Acting Loft educational theater is staging the Midsummer, their first-ever attempt at Shakespeare, May 19 through May 27 at 516 Pine St. Tickets cost $5 for students and seniors and $10 for adults. Buy them at the door. The show runs Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 1:30 p.m. Actors range in age from 8 to 60 years old. • Yellow brick road: In his second year as Peacock Players artistic director, Keith Wierich has scheduled The Wizard of Oz to end this season at the Nashua youth educational theater company. The classic is a “rite of passage” for young actors and Peacock is doing this in epic style with the largest cast they’ve ever assembled, state-of-the-art sound, lighting, digital production and authentic costuming and makeup. The tunes are familiar from the 1939 MGM Motion Picture including “If I Only Had A Brain,” “The Merry Old Land of Oz” and “If I Were King Of The Forest.”
Amanda Teneriello of Hudson plays Dorothy. Zach Bencal of Londonderry appears as the Cowardly Lion, Greg Tucker of Merrimack performs as the Tin Man, Tim Harrington plays the Scarecrow, Alexandra Socha of Nashua plays Glinda the Good Witch, Brady Lunch of Amherst plays the Wicked Witch and Trevor Buteau plays the Wizard of Oz. The cast members range in age from 5 to 18 years old. • New work: Check out a play by one of the finalists in the Yellow Taxi new play contest Monday, May 21, at 7:30 p.m. Manchester’s Michael Davidow submitted Salisbury Plain, based on the last week of King Arthur’s rule. John Sefel directs a staged reading of the script at the Hunt Memorial Building, 6 Main St., Nashua. It’s free to attend, and audience feedback is welcome. One of the four scripts selected for staged readings will be fully produced in March at the Susan McIntyre Play Festival. See yellowtaxiproductions.com.
