Nashua gets new wind sculpture

• New sculpture for Nashua: The City of Nashua put out a request for proposals for a kinetic sculpture for the new Riverwalk next to the Peddler’s Daughter over the Nashua River at 48 Main Street in April. The cost could not exceed $10,000. And although the outdoor artwork needed to either move or give the appearance of movement, it could not be electric. The bids were due May 30, and the winner has been selected. The Double Helix Horizontal by Lyman Whitaker of Utah will be made out of copper and stainless steel, and moves by wind, said Nashua Economic Development interim director Katherine Hersh. • Seeking cash: Applications are due July 2 for the new Arts in Health Care Initiative grants available from the NH State Arts Council. The funds are to support participatory arts programs for caregivers, staff, hospital patients and residents in nursing homes, hospice settings and rehabilitation centers. This round is for projects going on between Oct. 1 and March 31, 2008. Call 271-0794 or visit nh.gov/nharts.

• Small animals: The Children’s Museum in Portsmouth is exhibiting “Animals in Art” in their Gallery 280 through Sept. 2. Seacoast artists are showing drawings, paintings, fabric art, photography and Chinese brushwork of pets to wild animals to anthropomorphic illustrations. Gallery 280 is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. at 280 Marcy St. Admission is free for the gallery. Call 436-3853 or visit childrens-museum.org.

• The other half: Last year, Expoships launched a traveling art gallery on a luxury megayacht called SeaFair. The 228-foot ship exhibits fine art and antiques from a revolving group of 28 international dealers. The floating galleries will stop at 38 “affluent coastal cities” along the eastern seaboard for five days each of “invitation only” dockside events. It’s stopping at Portsmouth from Aug. 20 through Aug. 24, but apparently “New Hampshire” doesn’t sound exclusive enough, so Portsmouth has been wrapped in with “Maine Coast.” Visit expoships.com to get yourself an invite. There are various coffee bars and restaurants on the ship, as well.
