Expressing the loss of a paper mill

• Wicked cool: If you are feeling the need to express yourself, get to Victory Park in Manchester on Saturday, July 14. A new network called Art Action has reserved the park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with the help of MCAM, which graciously covered insurance costs. “Art Action: Temporary and Topical” is an open call with a theme of using art as an agent of social change. Put up a temporary sculptural installation, or get your voice heard regarding whatever contemporary issue you are working on. Painters, writers, poets, activists, performance artists — everyone’s welcome. Or just volunteer. Organizers are hoping for spontaneity in the artwork. However, they recommend that you check whatcanyousee.org to make sure what you are planning doesn’t violate park rules (use “user” and “artaction” to log in). Also, log in to schedule a performance slot.

• Wicked far north: The North Country is getting some arts attention. The Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire and the North Country Council are offering a series of workshops on grant-writing basics July 12, Aug. 9 and Sept. 20, at Rocks Estate in Bethlehem. Call 323-7302 or e-mail info@aannh.org to participate. The Arts Alliance is also seeking art from current and former Berlin residents for their “Now/ Then / When” exhibit. The work should relate to Berlin’s connection to the paper industry or deal with the current state of change in the city, along with the present-day issues Berlin faces. New media and conceptual or non-traditional work are encouraged. The deadline is July 18. The juried show will run from Aug. 24 through Sept. 8 at Heritage Park. • Winners: The Manchester Artists Association handed out awards to 18 artists at their annual “Art Affair in the Country” at the Harmony Center in Bedford June 10. The Rotary Club of Bedford donated a purchase prize of $500, awarded to Dee Lessard for “A Quiet Moment,” which will be placed in the Bedford Library art collection. Hollis painter Steve Previte took first place for an oil or acrylic, David Perkins took first for watercolor, and Robin Frisella took first for pastel. Bedford students received Certificate of Achievement Awards. MAA has more than 250 members. Visit manchester-artists.org.

• Photos and wine: Melissa Mannon took first place for photography at the MAA June 10 show, and her work is on display through July at The Wine Studio, 53 Hooksett Road in Manchester, 622-9463. Photographer Gleen Urquhart shares the exhibit, “Shadow and Light — Still Lifes.” The opening reception is July 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. While you are out, pass by art openings at MAA Gallery at 1528 Elm St. for their “Heatwaves” group show and East Colony Fine Art where Randy Knowles is “City2” paintings at 55 S. Commercial St. Those events run from 5 to 8 p.m.
