Reflections of current issues and the routine

• Social change: Take a stroll through Victory Park in Manchester, Saturday, July 14, between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. to see creations from “Art Action: Temporary and Topical.” So far, events may include a live painting tournament, conceptual scavenger hunt, free speech soap box derby, sculptural installations that comment on local or current events, and possibly performance art or music. Visit whatcanyousee.org. Get in the mood by checking out the NH Art Association’s “Vision and Voice: Art as Social and Political Commentary” show opening Friday, July 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. Works reflecting visions of, or presentations of, social, political, environmental, religious or other commentary were requested. The Levy Gallery is at 136 State St. in Portsmouth, 431-4230.

• Street view: Randy Knowles uses local city scenes as his muse in “City2.” Knowles has expanded on his oil and pastel daily life scenes of Manchester and Concord painted en plein air and the studio. In April while painting an image of the Palace Theatre in Manchester, the artist was struck by the image of a man who had begun the task of washing windows. The image “Spring Cleaning” encapsulates his show, Knowles stated. Knowles’ series runs through July 28 at East Colony Fine Art in Langer Place, 55 South Commercial St. in Manchester, 621-7400, rknowles.com. Meet him at an opening reception Thursday, July 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. Return to East Colony Saturday, July 14, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to see the artist paint a view in Manchester’s Millyard.  

• More wine: Visit Nolia Gallery July 14 from 6 to 10 p.m. to check out the opening of “Urban Romantics” show of artwork from Sean Palmatier, Ben Kwok, and Jason Rudolph Pena at 294 Route 101 in Amherst, 673-0921. The Manchester Artists Association Gallery holds a reception for their “Heatwaves” group show July 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. at 1528 Elm St., Manchester, at 785-6437.

• Festival fun: Hillsborough Pride is hosting its third annual Art in Park festival July 14, at Butler Park on Main Street in Hillsborough. The juried arts and crafts exhibit coincides with the Balloon Festival at Grimes Field. Call 464-2953. Dover’s Main Street program hosts Dover Arts Alive! Saturday, July 21, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Central Avenue in downtown Dover to celebrate visual, performing and creative arts. Call 740-6435 or e-mail dovermainst@ci.dover.nh.us.

• Teen art: The Artist Avenue Teen Arts Center’s summer hours are Monday through Thursday from 1 to 6 p.m. The adult-supervised studio is available for teens aged 13 through 20 on the fourth floor of Langer Place. • About women: Take your lunch to Currier Downtown at 52 Hanover St. in Manchester Thursday, July 19, at 12:30 p.m. and take in a free lesson from the Currier Museum of Art. “Art Bites: Speaking of Women” explores the lives and styles of women artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe. Call 668-0256.
