New NHIA work, plus city employee work on display

• New skills: The New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester held a ceremony for certificate graduates July 13. See their artwork in the college’s annual Certificate and Continuing Education Exhibition on display in their 77 Amherst St. and 148 Concord St. galleries through Aug. 14. David Dembkoski of Merrimack was appointed class speaker. He enrolled in spring 2003 to learn how to develop and print black and white film and signed up for the certificate program soon after. Donna L. Corey of Brookline, Joanne Gervais and Jasmine Nicole Goodrich of Derry, Erin Cathleen Gleason of Exeter, and Robert St. Hilaire of Bradford also received photography certificates. Barbara Bernier of Henniker, Velvet Brown of Manchester, Roberta Gatehouse of New Hampton, Beryl Maseng and Susan Joyce Wright of Nashua, Patti Morrow of Concord, Jennifer Ramsell of Wilton, Leslie Webber of Atkinson, and Kate White of Hooksett received interior design certificates. Photographer and author Peter E. Randall was set to address the graduates. He has been a reporter, photographer and editor of weekly newspapers, and organized Peter E. Randall Publisher LLC.

• Shining city: The creative talents of 46 of Manchester’s city employees and family members are showcased at Art on the Wall at City Hall, 800 Elm St., through August. The City of Manchester and the National Arts Program Foundation cosponsored the second annual art competition, and cash prizes totaling $2,400 were awarded June 27. Shawn Hanagan’s “Red Spring” took Mayor’s Choice and David Lawrence’s “Bald Eagle” took Governor’s Choice. Shaunna Duffy Smith took first prize for professional, Pat Andruchuk took first for intermediate, Arseniy Klimova took first for amateur. Bruce McColl of the Currier Art Center, Steve Jones of WZID and Lee Forgosh of Art 3 judged. Vote for “People’s Choice” until Aug. 30.

The event also raised money for the Manchester Art Fund. The public art fund will be used for the city’s first public sculpture in almost 20 years, to be placed in front of the Verizon Wireless Arena in late fall.

• Good job: Marketing firm Act One Creative (actonecreative.com) of Concord won first place at NH 2007 Internet Awards for the Web site they designed for the Concord Food Co-op (concordfoodcoop.coop). New Hampshire Business Review hosted the event.

• Calling for art: Organizers of the Bel Esprit Arts and Cultural Weekend in Manchester Sept. 8 and 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. are seeking fine crafters.
