Nesenkeag Farm opens it gates to the public
By Lisa Brown news@hippopress.com
This is your chance to get your hands on produce from one of the region’s top restaurant produce suppliers.
Nesenkeag Farm in Litchfield is opening its gates to the public on Saturday, Oct. 20, and selling its own organic produce, honey from B-Line Apiary and apples and cider from Brookdale Fruit Farm, Hollis.
You might recognize the farm’s name — it appears on the menus of many of the best restaurants in New Hampshire and Boston. Nesenkeag grows organic produce for Cotton, Z, all Michael Buckley’s restaurants, Bedford Village Inn and CR Sparks. In Cambridge, Nesenkeag delivers to the award-winning Craigie Street Bistro and Rialto, Chez Henri, Upstairs on the Square and Formaggio Kitchen. In Boston, Via Matta, Excelsior, Radius, Icarus and L’Espalier, plus a dozen other top spots.
You know you are a foodie if this list of restaurants makes you swoon.
Farm Day is an annual fundraising event for Nesenkeag, a nonprofit struggling to make ends meet. The day includes the once-a-year produce sale and a raffle of restaurant gift certificates, plus a poetry reading and book signing and jazz.
For the raffle, many of the restaurants that Nesenkeag supplies provide gift certificates for the event. Raffle tickets cost $5 each or six for $25. All the funds raised from the raffle go right back into the farm, which has been run by Eero Ruuttila and his wife Liana Eastman for the past couple of decades.
As for the poetry and jazz, Ruuttila is a nationally known contemporary poet and he will be bringing friends Paul Pines and Brenda Coultas to the farm for a 3:30 poetry reading. Pine has published two novels and six books of poetry. He ran the legendary Tin Palace Jazz Club in New York in the 1970s and will be reading from his new collection, Taxidancing, accompanied by a musician. Coultas has three books on poetry and will read a selection from them.
