Nominate your favorite arts-loving business

• Cross promotion: “Art on Main,” a collaboration between Designwares at 206 Main St. in Nashua and the Hollis Arts Society, kicks off with a wine and cheese party on Thursday, Jan. 24, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Designwares. Hollis Arts Society members’ work will be featured at the Designwares shop. Meet member artists at the wine and cheese and listen to Society musicians. The regional group formed in the summer of 2007 and its mission is to support the producing and emerging artist, through education and economic opportunities. Call 880-4730.

• Pat on the back: Honor a business or business leader who made an impact on the state’s arts and cultural community by nominating them for the 2008 Business in the Arts Awards sponsored by the New Hampshire Business Committee for the Arts. NHBCA is seeking nominations for business that sponsored, sent volunteers, provided in-kind donations or otherwise helped out arts and cultural efforts in 2007. Winners will be chosen from microenterprise, small, medium and large business categories. A “Leadership Award” will be given to an individual executive. The panel of judges will be made up of business and arts representatives. Winners will receive a work commissioned by a New Hampshire artist at a banquet May 12 at the Center of NH Radisson in Manchester. Download a nomination form at www.nhbca.com or call 224-8300. • Wicked little: Does size matter? In the case of artwork, small could mean cheap. New Hampshire Institute of Art students, staff and faculty show about 240 works that are 2 inches by 2 inches or smaller through Jan 24, at their 77 Amherst St. gallery in Manchester, 836-2573. All are priced $44.95 or less. Meet the artists and see which tiny creations won awards at the Minumental reception Thursday, Jan. 17, at noon.

• Happy birthday: Adults and children can drop into the Currier Art Center Gallery for “Family Wednesday: John Singer Sargent’s birthday” on Jan. 16 from 3 to 5 p.m. at 180 Pearl St. in Manchester. Learn about Sargent’s paintings and make your own for free. Family Wednesdays ran weekly at the Currier Downtown, which is now closed. The free activities are now scheduled for third Wednesdays at the Currier Museum of Art’s Currier Art Center. See www.currier.org or call 669-6144.

• Far away: “Landscape Impressions — Near and Far,” an exhibit of work by Marcia Blakeman and Debra Grubbs, runs through Saturday, Jan. 26, at East Colony Fine Art Gallery, 55 S. Commercial St. in Manchester. Some paintings utilize the same landscape subject to show differing styles. The gallery will hold an artists’ reception on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. Also at East Colony this month: on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 10:30 a.m., Grubbs will explain how to create a monotype at a free gallery talk. On Saturday, Jan. 26, Laurel Jamieson will hold a workshop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in which participants will create a framed miniature watercolor. The fee for the workshop is $60.
