Looking back a baseball

• American pastime: Lance Richbourg is known for his paintings of major-league baseball in the 1920s and 1930s, and is represented by the O.K. Harris Gallery in New York. Son of Lance Richbourg Sr., who played baseball professionally with the Nashville Vols and the Boston Braves, the younger Richbourg has used players in action as a subject for more than 25 years, and recently turned to interpreting Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio in paint. Richbourg works with a variety of paint types and surfaces such as wood and newspaper. He received his MFA from UCLA and has been a fine arts professor at Saint Michael’s College since 1975. “American Icons: Paintings from the Baseball and Marilyn Monroe/Joe DiMaggio Series” is on display at The New England College Gallery on Main Street in Henniker, 428-2329, nec.edu, through April 15. Richbourg will give a talk Thursday, March 20, at 1:30 p.m. and a reception for the exhibit follows from 4 to 6 p.m.
• Virtual Picker: Artists at the Picker Building in Nashua are working on developing an identity for their mill space, according to Sid Ceaser, who shares photo studio space with Sara Prindiville on the fourth floor. Landlord Jack Bolger rents to about 15 studios there, many of which offer classes to the public in such media as pottery, stained and fused glass and jewelry. Most include gallery space or create custom work at the 99 Factor St. Extension. They’ve launched www.pickerbuilding.com with links to studio Web sites. I just learned from the site that the mill’s name is due to its former purpose — it was where seeds and whatnot were picked out of cotton. Ceaser said that they are taking a cue from the Button Factory in Portsmouth (www.buttonfactorystudios.com), which hosted their 21st annual open studios in December.
• Coffee and paint: Abstract artist Jaison Cianelli moonlights working at A&E Roastery Cafe in New Boston. The self-taught artist describes his work as abstract, New Age, spiritual and inspirational. See his paintings at the new A&E location at 8 Mill St., New Boston, 578-3338, between March 15 and April 15. Cianelli talks about his work Saturday, March 15, from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
• Next show: New work makes up the “New Perspective” group show at Manchester Artists Associations gallery. Catherine Bligh, Patricia Bournival, Ann Bourque, Bruce Cantwell, Judy Gelinas, Sandra Keller, Elizabeth Lewandowski, Judy Palfry, Kristen Powers, Cal Smith and Yvonne Wheeler exhibit. Meet them at the show reception Thursday, March 13, from 5 to 8 p.m., at 1528 Elm St. in Manchester, 785-6437, www.manchester-artists.org. The exhibit runs through April 26.
