By Heidi Masek hmasek@hippopress.com
• At the library: Take in a free lecture and slide show on “Introduction to Exploring Art,” with a Currier Museum of Art docent at the Nashua Public Library, Thursday, March 27, at 7 p.m. Examples from the Currier’s collection are used to show intents and techniques of artists. The Currier focuses on American and European art with attention to New Hampshire and New England work. While there, check out paintings by Jin Rwei which will be on exhibit through April. Born in Taiwan, Rwei emigrated to the United States in 1985 and worked as a software engineer (www.jinrwei.com). She started taking oil painting lessons in 1998, and has continued painting mostly impressionist-style landscapes since then. Meet Rwei at a reception Saturday, April 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. The library is at 2 Court St., in Nashua. Call 589-4610 or visit www.nashualibrary.org.
• The return: Speaking of the Currier, its docent visits to libraries and schools have been part of its outreach program while it is closed for expansion. After almost two years, the Manchester museum is holding a week of free public events and admission to celebrate its grand reopening and $21.4 million worth of new and renovated space from Sunday, March 30, through Saturday, April 5. The Currier is even offering free Zimmerman House highlight tours (the house is designed by Frank Lloyd Wright), for which they normally charge extra. Learn about the collections from the museum’s leaders during tours with director Susan Strickler, chief curator Andrew Spahr, deputy director Susan Leidy and assistant curator Sharon Mat Atkins. The expansion added more gallery space, a lobby, classrooms, an auditorium, a gift shop and a striking winter garden.
See www.currier.org, call 669-6144 or check The Hippo’s gallery listings for dates, times and tour titles. The museum will be open from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, plus 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. It is open until 8 p.m. on the first Thursday each month. The entrance is now at 150 Ash St.
• Competing: E.W. Poore marks its fourth annual juried art exhibit with a reception and awards presentation Thursday, March 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at 531 Front St. in Manchester. New jury categories include portrait/figurative, nature/wildlife, architectural/cityscape and contemporary/abstract. Call 622-3802.
