Art for Mother’s Day

• Mother’s Day shopping: If you are passing through the Lowell, Mass., area and need a gift for mom, stop at Western Avenue Studios, 122 Western Ave. You can find 160 working artists there during their Spring Fling Art Extravaganza, Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4, from noon to 5 p.m. The complex has grown from one floor of studios to four where you can find jewelry, fabric art and paintings or enlist help from a photo studio for a family portrait (there are lots of great photo studios closer to home too — see the art venue list in the Hippo). See www.westernavenuestudios.com or call (978) 453-1992. If you are heading toward the Seacoast, stop at Exeter Fine Crafts and meet Pearsall and Son Goldsmiths. John and his wife Susan, of Northfield, have been creating gold and sterling silver jewelry for 35 years. John went to Dartmouth College before heading to the University of Paris for post-grad work. After stints at teaching and as a stained glass craftsman, he was hired by a friend, James Russell, as a silversmith-jeweler. John’s father and son were both business members. Their work is featured at Exeter Fine Crafts, 61 Water St. in Exeter in May, and they will be there to talk about the collection Saturday, May 3, from noon to 3 p.m. Call 778-8282.
• How it’s made: About a dozen artists and some art students will be at work at venues in Londonderry for Art in Action on Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Londonderry Arts Council presents the show, with fine artists from Londonderry, Derry and Windham. At the Grange Hall No. 44 at 260 Mammoth Road, Patti Crowley, Corinne Dodge, Lili Mayer, Geoff Gual, Judy Krassowski, Susan Monty, Barbara Scott, Ingeborg Seaboyer and John Sweeney will be working and selling art. Nutfield Sessions musicians (www.nutfieldsessions.org) perform there from noon to 3 p.m. both days.
Ginny Barrett-Leach and her students will be at the Londonderry Leach Library, 278 Mammoth Road, on Saturday, where work by Mary Burke is also featured. Elaine Farmer Art Studio, at 106 Chase Road, will show student work and Farmer will be demonstrating techniques (www.elainefarmer.com, 432-2447). • New at MAA: The Manchester Artists Association Gallery’s new group show is called “Open Windows” in honor of the season. Sharon Allen, Ann Bourque, Mary Crump, Judy Gelinas, Judy Hynes, Sandra Keller, Aline Lotter, Judy Palfry, William Earnshaw and Cal Smith display there through June 21, at 1528 Elm St., in the Carol Rines Building in Manchester. • Smart kids: The Allstate Art Festival, launched in 1999, brings serious young artists together to work with professional artists. Art educators can each nominate two high school juniors. The Currier Museum of Art receives about 135 nominees annually, who show work to and are interviewed by Currier staff or volunteer art educators. This year, 63 students were chosen to participate.
See the outcome of their two days of work together, Saturday, May 3, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Slides of work will be shown at 3 p.m., and a closing ceremony is at 3:30 p.m. in the museum’s winter garden. An alumni reception will be held at the same time in the Marisol Studio. Professional artists from New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont include Denise Dumas, Christine Destrempes, Ann Laroche, Richard Gombar, Tasha Marie Cough, printmaker Liam Sullivan, installation artist Chris Nelson, photographer Linda Kay Ost, Jim Quinn and architect Karolina Kawiaka.

• Schedule change: The first Second Saturday Artwalk, organized by artists connected with the Constant Art Studio (formerly Artist Avenue) in Langer Place in Manchester, is being postponed from Saturday, May 3, to the second Saturday in June. To participate, a Manchester studio just needs to be open on the appointed day (cafés and other businesses are welcome to participate, too), and the venue will be marked on a map.
