Area Mexican restaurant celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is less a Mexican version of July 4 and more an American excuse to celebrate Mexican food and culture.
Most Americans mistakenly think that May 5 celebrates Mexico’s independence, which is actually celebrated on Sept. 16 (or dieciséis de septiembre). Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of a band of Mexican fighters and their victory over the French army in 1862. In Mexico, it is largely a regional celebration, while in the States the day (this year, a Monday) is more of an excuse to have a good time.
There are a number of Mexican-themed restaurants in this area, and many have special events planned for the day.
Amigo’s Mexican Cantina, 20 South St. in Milford, 673-1500, has a Cinco de Mayo countdown clock on their Web site (www.amigosmilford.com). They are celebrating for five days, starting Thursday, May 1, with promos every night. The highlights include a performance by the Grinning Lizards on Saturday night, which is also tequila night. An iPod will be given away on Friday, May 2, and the May 5 will be Corona and house Margarita night.
Desert Moon in the Mall of New Hampshire, 668-7300, will celebrate a day early on Sunday, May 4, with a live band. Their menu is at www.desertmoongrille.com.
Hermanos Cocina Mexicana, 11 Hills Ave., Concord, 224-5669, plans on promos from 5 to 9 p.m. — one every hour. There will also be drink specials tied to those promos, as well as live entertainment. The restaurant will stick to its regular menu for the evening, which can be viewed at www.hermanosmexican.com.
La Hacienda del Rio, 4 Taggart Dr. in Nashua, 888-3353. Plans are still in the works, but the restaurant typically has special food and drink selections. Go to www.lahaciendanh.com.

Tortilla Flat, 595 DW Highway, Merrimack, 424-4479, will have food and drink specials. The menu is on tortillaflat.userworld.com.
Don Quijote, 362 Union St., Manchester, 622-2246, will have both food specials and music that night.
Shorty’s Mexican Roadhouse, at Northside Plaza, in Manchester, 625-1730, and the Nashua Mall, 882-4070, will host huge celebrations. “It’s our busiest day of the year,” said Jacki Window, Shorty’s president. “In Manchester, we’ll have a tent with a band, prizes, and special drink prices. Margaritas’ eight locations in New Hampshire are celebrating five days of Cinco de Mayo with two large events — a one million pesos giveawayand a trip to Cancun. You must be present to win. The Cinco party begins at 11:30 a.m. To find a location and view contest rules, go to www.margs.com.
