This one time, at drama camp... There are still local drama programs open in case your young thespian needs a creative outlet this summer (and you need a break from the kids). Generally the camps end with a performance. Some offer supervision before or after camp. Here are some options close to home: • Wicked fancy camps: Teens can earn college credit by attending one of three one-week “Musical Theatre Intensive” sessions produced by the Palace Theatre at Chester College this summer. The $1,200 tuition includes room and meals. Industry professionals will teach classes in acting, dance, audition technique, voice and other skills. A Broadway or industry special guest will provide a workshop, and campers will visit professional shows and rehearsals. Sessions are July 20-26; July 27-Aug. 2, and Aug. 3-9. Bedford Youth Performing Company is offering a “Musical Theatre Intensive” from Aug. 18 through Aug. 22, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a focus on audition preparation for colleges or professional groups. Broadway performers and dance professionals are scheduled to work with the students. An audition is scheduled for Tuesday, June 24, at BYPC, 155 Route 101 in Bedford. Call 472-3894 for an appointment. The cost is $350. BYPC hosts other camps, as well. • Nashua: Performance education complex All Access opened last year. Their “VIP Theatre Camps” include instruction on vocal, dance and acting technique for ages 9 to 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. “Cabaret Camp” runs July 6 through July 18 and “Hot Jazz and Cool Swing” runs Aug. 4 through Aug. 15. The fee is $275. All Access Productions is at 25 Front St., 886-2768, www.allaccessnh.com. Peacock Players still has spaces open for its theater camps for ages 7 to 18. Peacock has run the popular camps for more than 25 years. The three-week sessions are held at Rivier College in Nashua and cost $475. Call 889-2330 ext. 93 or see peacockplayers.org. Sessions run July 7-July 25 and July 28 through Aug. 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Yellow Taxi Productions partners with Nashua Parks & Recreation to provide summer camps that frequently involve professionals YTP hires for their outdoor summer show. James Phillips holds an MFA in Directing from Catholic University and is now on the theater faculty at Wabash College in Indiana. He leads “Comedy Workshop” July 14 through July 18 for ages 10 to 13. Leah Belanger leads “From the Page to the Stage” July 21 through Aug. 1 for ages 10 to 13 and “Discovery Theatre” Aug. 4 through Aug. 8 for ages 6 to 9. YTP artistic director Suzanne Delle instructs “Scanning Shakespeare” July 28 through Aug 15 for ages 12 to 16. Olympics,” July 12 through July 26 for ages 10 to 17 with Phillips and Amanda Pawlik; “The Princess & The Pea,” July 28 through Aug. 3 for ages 12 to 18 with Glickman and Jeff Caron; and “Majestic’s Making the Band,” Aug. 4 through Aug. 16 for ages 10 to 17 with Glickman and Michael Gallagan. The Palace Theatre runs four two-week sessions separated by age group. Campers have an opportunity to watch a Palace Professional Theatre for Children production. Second- through sixth-graders can attend “Born on the 4th of July!” camp June 30 through July 11 or “Puppets are People Too” July 28 through Aug. 8. Fourth- through eighth-graders can join “Lost in Space” July 14 through July 25, or “Summer Camp Idol 2008” Aug. 11 through Aug. 22. Camps are held at the Palace at 80 Hanover St. Costs range from $375 to $425. Thespians from age 8 to 15 can work with college-level performers at the Summer Theatre Camp at The Derryfield School. The two sessions are July 7 through July 18 and July 28 through Aug. 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The session fee is $450. See www.derryfield.org or call 669-4524. Last year, the Acting Loft launched a “Spotlight Project,” one-week sessions for small groups of middle and high school teens to focus on specific genres of theater. This year sessions run two weeks. “Trying to cover all of comedia dell’arte in a week proved difficult,” said John Sefel. That popular topic returns July 21 through Aug. 1. Spotlight focuses on Greek theater July 7 through July 18. Students create theater on “topics they care about” Aug. 4 through Aug. 15. Acting Loft also runs a musical theater camp with space for about 30 during those dates, which will produce Robin Hood, Cinderella and The Wizard of Oz. Campers from kindergarten through eighth grade can register. Days run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and session fees are $200 for Spotlight, $300 for camp. Acting Loft is at 516 Pine St., Manchester, www.actingloft.org, 666-5999. • Henniker: Henniker Youth Theatre offers four weeks of theater camps at John Stark Regional High School in Weare, focusing on Oliver, Mulan, Jr., short films and improvisation.
