Curtain Calls

• Next week: There’s been a lull in performances happening nearby for a few weeks, but that ends soon. Three community shows open Friday, June 20. In a change of pace, Billy Butler, who has frequently been seen posing in drag for this publication, is putting his music and acting abilities into a less transgendered role. He performs in The Cotton Patch Gospel, a bluegrass and folk telling of the Gospel according to Matthew that involves 20th-century Georgia and angry televangelists. Also a musician, Butler has acted extensively in the Seacoast area as well as in southern New Hampshire and elsewhere. He returns to the Acting Loft for the performance, where he held the role of artistic director more than a year ago. The Acting Loft is working with producer William L. Ritchie to produce the show with music by Harry Chapin, whose best-known songs include “Cat’s in the Cradle.” The Cotton Patch Gospel runs Friday, June 20, and Saturday, June 21, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 22, at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for students. • Backstage antics: Moon Over Buffalo looks to be one of those “hilarity ensues” sort of plays. Husband and wife actors are on tour in 1953 Buffalo when they find out director Frank Capra is coming to their show. But there’s plenty of opportunity for the two to get in their own way in the Ken Ludwig farce. Jeff Caron directs Moon Over Buffalo at The Majestic Theatre, 281 Cartier St. in Manchester. It runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. from June 20 to June 28, with a 2 p.m. show Sunday, June 29. Ticket costs range from $8 to $13; call 669-7469 or see www.majestictheatre.net.
• Trailer park Romeo: In Derry, Ghostlight Theater Co. is setting Romeo and Juliet in the Verona Meadows Trailer Park. Director Robert C. Haas pointed out that “Two houses both alike in dignity” doesn’t specify the socioeconomic status of those houses. Ghostlight is calling their re-telling of the Shakespeare tale, R & J. They perform Friday, June 20, and Saturday, June 21, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, June 22, at 2 p.m. at the Adams Memorial Opera House, 29 West Broadway in Derry. Ticket costs range from $12.50 to $15.
