Publisher's Note: Something new to read
By Jeff Rapsis
There’s something new to read this week in southern New Hampshire.
Starting this Thursday, you’ll find copies of HippoMagazine all around the region — in stores, offices, waiting rooms and maybe even in your mailbox.
What’s HippoMagazine? It’s a new monthly publication from the folks who bring you the state’s largest weekly newspaper (us).
HippoMagazine aims to be a full-color showcase of the best that southern New Hampshire has to offer. While our weekly paper will continue to report what’s going on each week in the area, each month our new magazine will provide an in-depth look at one subject in detail: food, education, culture, nightlife and all the other areas that make life interesting. Since you probably don’t have room to keep a year’s worth of Hippos on your bookshelf, HippoMagazine can serve as a great (and compact) guide to hold on to throughout the year, something you can refer back to when you’re looking for a Sunday farmers’ market or a great place to get an Asian noodle dish.
Because we’re in the harvest season, the first issue of HippoMagazine focuses on a subject that’s close to us all: food. For readers, it’s a magazine to keep throughout the season, to use as a resource (it has a calendar of events, a guide to farmers’ markets and some insider suggestions on where to get an adventurous yet inexpensive meal) and to refer to for local ideas and insights. And for advertisers, it’s a great way to be front and center before customers who are interested in your business and ready to buy.
Looking ahead, next month HippoMagazine will focus on all the ways readers can “create” something new in their lives — from a new career to a new hobby. The issue will offer information for readers interested in non-traditional and online degrees, certificates and other courses to increase your skills and help you reach the next level of career success.
It’ll also offer a listing of classes and workshops to help you embark on a new after-hours adventure. From photography to gardening, cooking to dancing, we’ll feature all the places that readers can go to create a more exciting life.
In October, look for HippoMagazine to be devoted to culture, meaning everything from the Currier Museum of Art to the Tupelo Music Hall in Londonderry.
This edition will be great for newcomers looking to discover the area’s museums, theaters and galleries, as well as for long-time residents interested in breaking out of their entertainment routines.
As with all our publications, HippoMagazine will be free to anyone who wants a copy. It’s still a high-quality magazine like any you’d find on the newsstand. We just don’t charge you for it, which allows us to deliver and distribute it more freely — and that’s good for readers and advertisers.
