Currier ventures into pop art

• Pop art: Andy Warhol is the subject of the Currier Museum of Art’s first big special exhibit since it reopened after expansion in the spring. Museum curators have so far been using their expanded gallery space to show off more of their permanent collection. The Currier has about 11,000 objects mainly from American and European artists. “Andy Warhol: Pop Politics” opens Saturday, Sept. 27, featuring more than 60 of his paintings, prints, drawings and photographs of political figures. Warhol was fascinated by the media coverage of Mao after President Nixon’s visit to China, according to the Currier. Warhol used news images of Mao to develop drawings, a collection of screen prints, Mao wallpaper, and a Xerox series of images which will be displayed in “Pop Politics.” The exhibit ends Jan. 4, 2009. • Time to learn: The Currier Art Center, which is adjacent to the Currier Museum, starts its fall term Sept. 29, with courses for just about every age beginning with “Art Start” for two- and three-year olds. Pre-teens can try clay animation, among other media. Teen and adult classes include glass, clay and oil painting. Class fees range from about $150 to $240. One-day workshops are offered throughout the session, which ends Dec. 13. The Art Studio at E.W. Poore starts classes Sept. 9. Subjects include drawing, colored pencil, watercolor, acrylic painting, pastels, oil painting, portraiture, cartooning and matting and framing. • Art colony for anybody: More than 125 people from 27 states and eastern Canada are heading to the Squam Art Workshops. Held at the Rockywold-Deephaven Camps at Squam Lake from Sept. 10 through Sept. 14, the retreat is billed as an artist colony experience for students from all experience levels.
