Local Color
A wealth of gallery openings

• From foam: Annette Mitchell’s hand-pulled prints — some colorful, others sparse, with black Sumi ink — are juxtaposed with textural and metallic prints by Davida Cook at The Derryfield School’s Lyceum Gallery. Both of these New Hampshire artists use polystyrene foam plates to create their prints, according to a release. Mitchell, professor of art and coordinator of the drawing program at Plymouth State University, has published a book, DVD and video about her foam plate process. See their work at Derryfield, 2108 River Road in Manchester (669-4524), through Dec. 12. Meet them at a reception Friday, Nov. 7, between 5:30 and 7 p.m.

• To market: Visit the Indoor Market at the Franco-American Centre on Saturday, Nov. 8, where local arts, crafts and farm products are expected to be sold. It’s from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The center is at 52 Concord St. in Manchester (669-4045). No market day is planned for December, according to the Centre.

• Wine and cheese: Meet Cori Caputo on Friday, Nov. 7, at The Wine Studio, 27 Buttrick Road, in Londonderry (www.thewinestudionh.com, 432-WINE). Her show, “Inside Out,” hangs in the wine and gift shop in November. “Every creature or object has something to say and I am compelled to share their story in my paintings,” Caputo said in a press release. Visit www.coricaputo.com. The Nov. 7 reception runs from 6 to 8 p.m. with a wine tasting from F&F Wine Imports. Visit Southern New Hampshire University’s McIninch Art Gallery in Robert Frost Hall for the opening of “Distant Shores: Culture Exchange in Contemporary Art,” Thursday, Nov. 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. The multicultural exhibit runs through Dec. 13, although the gallery will be closed from Nov. 23 through Nov. 30. SNHU is at 2500 North River Road in Manchester (629-4622, www.snhu.edu/art). The Currier Museum of Art is open Thursday, Nov. 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for its monthly evening hours with public events. Talk with Kirsten Reynolds of Newmarket, whose site-specific installation will be exhibited in the Currier through Feb. 1. The Currier is at 150 Ash St. in Manchester (669-6144, currier.org). Also, at the Currier, an “ARTalk” is scheduled Sunday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. called “From Pharaohs to Presidents: Art and Politics.” The program is related to the current “Andy Warhol: Pop Politics” exhibit.

• For veterans: The Hollis Arts Society’s Arts4Vets program will use income from holiday ornaments ($5 to $25) to support needs of veterans with long-term medical challenges and offer arts services to veterans. Buy the ornaments at the HAS Holiday Arts Gala on Saturday, Nov. 15, and Sunday, Nov. 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Lawrence Barn on Depot Road in Hollis. The gala also features other art and gifts, plus entertainment (880-4730, sfscholl@aol.com).

• Make a bid: View work from 50 artists between Nov. 10 and Nov. 14 that will be auctioned at the New Hampshire Institute of Art to raise money for their scholarships. More than 94 percent of the students receive aid, according to NHIA. The auction is Saturday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m., with cocktails at 6 p.m. Both the preview and auction are at 148 Concord St. in Manchester. Individual tickets cost $35. • Correction: There is no Nov. 7 reception for artist Jill Fischman at Art on the Wall at City Hall Gallery in Manchester, as noted on page 25 of The Hippo, Oct. 30-Nov. 5 issue. There is still, however, one during Open Doors Manchester, Nov. 20, from 5 to 8 p.m.
