New show openings and holiday fine craft options

• Abstraction: View the abstract watercolors and collages of Ethel Hills at The Wine Studio, 53 Hooksett Road in Manchester (622-WINE), this month. “I always like to leave room for viewers to bring their own memories and experiences to the work. I think that’s one of the advantages of working more abstractly. The paintings become more open to interpretation, making the viewer an active participant in the process,” Hills stated in a press release. Visit The Wine Studio Thursday, Dec. 4, between 6 and 8 p.m. to catch Hills at an opening reception for “Landscape Musings,” and do some wine tasting. Over at the Wine Studio’s expansion at 27 Buttrick Road in Londonderry (432-9463, www.thewinestudionh.com), work by Glenna Evans is featured in December. See her still-life photographs of wine and musical instruments at a reception for “Wine and Song” and a wine tasting Friday, Dec. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m.
• In color: Artist and instructor Kevin Dadoly is colorblind. “I’ve taught myself the science of color ... I use a systematic way of organizing and mixing colors in order to achieve the values that are critical to my paintings,” Dadoly stated in a press release. His latest oil paintings are on exhibit in the Tower Gallery at New Hampshire Antique Co-op, 323 Elm St. in Milford (673-8499, www.nhantiquecoop.com), through Feb. 28. Meet him Saturday, Dec. 6, at a reception between 1 and 3 p.m. A “Signature” member of the Copley Society of Boston, Dadoly teaches at New Hampshire Institute of Art, Artists Association of Nantucket, Adult Enrichment in Amherst and on the Maine islands North Haven, Vinalhaven and Islesboro. His studio is in Amherst.
• Young artists: Kids can enter the “What Giving Means to Me” contest with help from a local artist Saturday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to noon at Hannaford Supermarket, 201 John E. Devine Dr. in Manchester. Healthy snacks will be donated to the winner’s classroom, and $100 will be donated in his or her name to a local food pantry.
• Museum students: Art activities, demonstrations and face painting are on the program for the Currier Museum Art Center’s student exhibition and reception Thursday, Dec. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. closing their fall term. There’s also an open house Saturday, Dec. 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s at 180 Pearl St. in Manchester (www.currier.org, 669-6144, ext. 122).
• Holiday stuff: Visit Newport’s Library Arts Center at 58 North Main St. (863-3040, www.libraryartscenter.org) for its “Gallery of Gifts.” The annual fundraiser is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., through Dec. 20. The show and sale of fine crafts and art by regional artists features work by furniture maker Terry Moore and wood workers he mentors through the NH State Prison Project. The Currier Museum of Art (150 Ash St. in Manchester, www.currier.org, 669-6144) holds a winter-themed scavenger hunt during its “First Thursday” evening open hours Dec. 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Grammy-nominated guitarist Lester Hirsch performs. Find holiday cards and gift items in the museum shop and get a paperweight or art poster free with a purchase. Admission costs $10 for adults, but youth under 18 enter free. The Exeter Arts Committee opens their Holiday Art Show Thursday, Dec. 4, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., during the Exeter Festival of Trees. Eclectic work in several media from 60 local and regional artists will be exhibited Saturdays and Sundays, from noon to 4 p.m., through Dec. 21, at Exeter Town Hall, 10 Front St. (exeterarts.home.comcast.net). There’s also a reception Sat., Dec. 6, from noon to 4 p.m. Stop by a holiday art sale and show with work from the New England College Student Art Association and Henniker Artisans, running from Dec. 5 through Dec. 18. Find glass, knits, jewelry, teddy bears and more. There’s an opening reception Friday, Dec. 5, from 4 to 7 p.m. The show is at the New England College Gallery on Main Street in Henniker (428-2329, www.nec.edu). The Artisans Online Mall (artisansonlinemall.com) features lots of made-in-New Hampshire items and is expanding with a new live holiday craft fair, Artisans @ Mt. Monadnock. It’s Saturday, Dec. 6, and Sunday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Shattuck Inn & Golf Resort in Jaffrey. Find wooden toys, baked goods, baby gear, artwork and more. Visit the Mill Brook Gallery Saturdays and Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., from Dec. 6 through Dec. 14, for “Art for the Holiday Giving.” Work includes jewelry, pottery and glass.
