Learn to paint or draw

• New year, new skills: Several art instructors start sessions in January, including those teaching at E.W. Poore, 531 Front St. in Manchester. Kim Roth teaches acrylics, watercolor, drawing and art history. Jeanne LaChance teaches drawing, pencil, watercolor and oil. Other instructors include Sue Zylak, Mary Buergin, Michelle Beliveau, Jennifer Wentz, Pat Steiner, Suzanne Binnie, Jeanne Bisceglia and Frank Moulin. • Staying put: Governor John Lynch reappointed the chair of the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, Karen Burgess Smith of Exeter, to another term. She was appointed in 2003 and became chair in 2006. She has directed the Lamont Gallery at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter since 2003. Her previous roles include vice president for academic affairs at the New Hampshire Institute of Art, and fine arts department chair and gallery director at St. Paul’s School. Lynch also reappointed Toni Pappas, who joined the council in 2005. She’s a Hillsborough County Commissioner and an account executive with Business NH magazine. The former state representative served as president of the Manchester Historic Association and the Palace Theatre board of trustees. For more about the council, see www.nh.gov/nharts.
• Show off: Artists, bring your work to Poetry, Music & Art Night, Friday, Jan. 2, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Club Cannon, 40 Grove St. in Peterborough. Poetry reading and acoustic music is performed in open-mike style. Club Cannon likes to have diversity of age, experience and background in the participants at these evenings. It’s free, but you do have to follow the teen center’s rules, so don’t bring beverages, use foul language, or promote drugs, alcohol or anything illegal while there. • Gone soon: Don’t forget, “Andy Warhol: Pop Politics” closes Sunday, Jan. 4 at the Currier Museum of Art. The special exhibit showcases portraits of political figures created by the Pop artist. The Currier is at 150 Ash St. in Manchester (669-6144, www.currier.org). Currier tours of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Zimmerman house also close for the season that day.
