Earth, animals, and learning to draw

• Openings: Find Earth Day-related artwork at the Manchester Artists Association Gallery. There’s a reception for their group show, “Mother Earth,” Thursday, March 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. It includes paintings, photography, small work, prints and notecards. “Mother Earth,” closes April 25, and has a second reception during Manchester’s Open Doors cultural trolley tour night, Thursday, April 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. The MAA Gallery is at 1528 Elm St. in Manchester (785-6437, www.manchester-artists.org). At Saint Anselm College, the paintings of Leah Kuehne are the subject of “Procedere-An Emerging Artist Series” in the Chapel Art Center. It’s the first solo exhibit for Kuehne of Manchester, according to the college. The Alva deMars Megan Chapel Art Center is on the campus at 100 Saint Anselm Drive in Manchester (641-7470). • Helping animals: The Nashua Area Artists Association holds a “celebratory reception” for “Wild About Animal Art” with work by 37 artists. It’s Sunday, March 21, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at Gallery One at the Millhouse, 5 Pine St. Extension in Nashua (883-0603, www.naaasite.org). Some proceeds benefit the Humane Society For Greater Nashua. The N.A.A.A. also holds a reception for their Emerging Artist Student Talent (E.A.S.T.). children’s art show, that day. W.E. Butts, 2009 poet laureate of New Hampshire, will read work, Janis Cosby demonstrates techniques and Monty Whitfield will give an artist talk also during the reception. Gallery One is open Friday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
• Currier happenings: The special exhibit “Building Books–The Art of David Macaulay” is at the Currier Museum of Art through June 14, on tour from the Norman Rockwell Museum. Check out more than 100 drawings and materials from the author and illustrator of The Way We Work and other titles. “The Way We Work” is the theme for the Currier’s monthly “Family Saturday” event, March 14, at 150 Ash St. in Manchester. It features art activities and a guided walk (11:30 a.m.) among other programs between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Admission is free Saturdays between 10 a.m. and noon.
Nearby at the Currier Museum Art Center, there’s a workshop for teens and adults Saturday, March 14, from noon to 4 p.m. on “Sketching for Travelers.” The focus is on learning to quickly record details while working from projected images. The fee is $60. Call 669-6144, ext. 122, or see www.currier.org to register. Or just bring your pencils and paper (or use the Currier’s) to the museum Sunday, March 15, when they hold a monthly “Drawing in the Galleries” event from 1 to 3 p.m. Art educators are around for advice. Adult museum admission costs $10, and youth under 18 enter for free.
