Curtain calls

• All about Twain: Next year is the centennial of Mark Twain’s death and 175th anniversary of his birth, and Concord is already getting ready to mark the occasion. The Children’s Theatre Project of the Community Players of Concord presents The Adventures of Tom Sawyer Friday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m., at the Concord City Auditorium, 2 Prince St. The Concord Library hosts a Countdown to Adventure Read-In of Twain’s first novel from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, when UNH Professor Courtney Marshall will give a pre-show talk at the Audi about how Twain developed the character of Tom Sawyer, and how Huckleberry Finn grew from this tale. Read-In participants will try to finish the novel when the Read-In continues Saturday at the library from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., when it moves to the Audi before the Players’ matinee. • Fairy tales: S.P.A.T.S., Specializing in the Performing Arts, Theatre and Stagecraft, presents Sondheim’s Into the Woods Friday, Oct. 16, and Saturday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m., at the Adams Memorial Opera House, 29 West Broadway, Derry (715-1855). Tickets cost $12 in advance or $15 at the door.
• Larry Shue: Playwright Larry Shue’s comedies seem to be popular among community theater in the area. Bedford Off Broadway presents the story of a painfully socially awkward “nerd” in The Nerd, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., from Oct. 16 through Oct. 24, at the Bedford Old Town Hall, 3 Meetinghouse Road in Bedford (www.bedfordoffbroadway.com). Kevin Riley directs Rick Martel, Robert Minicucci, Michael Coppola, LaNette Synan, Donald Cox, Renee Reese and Connor Bergin.
Milford Area Players present The Foreigner Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m., from Oct. 16 through Oct. 25 at the Amato Center, 56 Mont Vernon St. in Milford (673-0469). When British demolition expert Froggy LeSeuer brings his friend Charlie to a rural Georgia fishing lodge, he tells the other guests Charlie doesn’t speak English to save the shy man from having to talk.
