Potter’s Bowl offers soup for a cause

Warm your soul with a bowl of soup for a good cause — and keep the hand-crafted bowl afterward.
Community Caregivers of Greater Derry will host its fifth annual Potter’s Bowl fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. A $25 ticket gets each guest a handmade pottery bowl to fill with all-you-can-eat soups from area restaurants and business.
“I like this type of fundraiser the most because I don’t think there are a lot of them out there that every person can afford to go to,” executive director Cindee Alice Tanuma said. “Yes, it’s $25, but you get a lot for the money. The bowl alone is probably worth $25.”
Ten restaurants will provide the soup for the evening. The varieties include corn chowder from T-Bones, Kansas City steak soup from Promises to Keep, potato leek from Gourmet Grill, minestrone from Lucciano’s, beef barley from Avandi’s, chicken and sausage gumbo from Pinkerton Tavern, and Italian wedding soup from Rig A Tonys. Served along with the soups is all-you-can eat bread from Panera, and desserts from local grocers and businesses. Tanuma noted there will be varieties of sugar-free soups and desserts offered, as well as gluten-free bread for anyone with special dietary requirements.
Last year’s event raised more than $4,800. This year 25 potters and five schools, such as Pinkerton Academy and Alvirne High School, will donate more than 200 bowls for the occasion. Teachers and students from the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester have also made bowls, and Mike Gibbons at Nutfield Pottery has offered to let people come to his studio to make a bowl for the event. And the selection of bowls will be staggered throughout the evening so there will be a large variety from which to choose.
The evening will feature a silent auction. Items include quilts, artwork, photographs and of course pottery. Artist Glen MacInnis of Auburn has donated a large planter and two very large bowls for the auction. Also up for bid are autographed books from New Hampshire writers Jodi Picoult, Janet Evanovich and John Clayton.
Community Caregivers of Greater Derry has a volunteer network that provides support and assistance to help people maintain their independence in their home environment in Derry, Londoderry, Windham, Sandown, Chester and Hampstead. More than 320 volunteers help approximately 250 elderly, disabled and chronically or temporarily ill people with caregiving tasks. All of the money raised from the event goes to help the organization with this mission.
“Since what we do is train volunteers, the money will go toward all the necessities such as paying the rent, utilities and staff,” Tanuma said.
Only 200 tickets will be sold for the event, which is typically a sell-out. The fun will take place at Windham Presbyterian Church, 1 Church Road in Windham.
