Artist of the Month - Philip Buller

By Bruce Bressack  04/12/2004  Boomers

It was the early 70's, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, except 'four-struggling-musicians'...

...and the guy in the corner room (with the ballerina girlfriend), who drove Taxi, at night, in Boston.

One of the four 'starving artists' was Philip Buller (who performed with Steven Mullaney in a group called 'Beckett').

I have vivid memories of Phil and me, "hanging out" in our 'communal living room', taking turns harmonizing on each other's songs - sometimes on guitar, sometimes on piano, and sometimes on the "lobster-trap-coffee-table" (also known as the "drum set").

As fate would have it, and through the "miracle of the internet', I located Phil a year or so ago.  We've kept in touch, but, until recently, we haven't shared our new songs.  That changed today, when I received Phil's 'High Meadow' CD.

'High Meadow' is a beautifully constructed and performed collection of 22 songs written between 1979 and 1985.

Truth be told, I may be biased toward Phil's music, but I truly enjoyed the CD......so much so, that I wanted to share some of the songs with my readers.

Here are four songs to "whet your appetite".

'Beginnings'......is a joyous, upbeat, feel-good song.

'Nothing to Forgive'.....is a tug-at-the-heart song.

'What You Don't Have'......is a thoughtful, reflective song.

'No Reply' ......is a love-gone-astray song.

Life is about intersections and connections.  The relationships we form, however fleeting or intense, last a lifetime.  People, who enter our lives, even for a brief period, stay in our souls forever.

On that note - Phil, keep writing and playing (and painting).  Your thoughtful and heartfelt music (and art) can make a real difference in this crazy old world.

Click here for a circa '73 example of Phil and me working through one of his songs (on the 'communal piano').  Note: the audio quality is "poor", due to tape deterioration.
