Black Brimmer: 1087 Elm St., Manchester; 669-5523. Good food, live music most nights. One of the city's best urban gathering places and a pioneer in getting Manchester's downtown revitalization rolling. Great for lunch or dinner.

Charbel's: 2323 Brown Ave., Manchester; 624-8035. Former roadside saloon has been transformed into bright, cheery family restaurant featuring big menu of popular choices and good value, with an emphasis on meat and prime rib. Grandma's in the kitchen, too, so Lebanese favorites are also offered.

The Chateau: 201 Hanover St., Manchester; 627-2677. A time-honored downtown favorite. New "Tenderloin Room Steakhouse and Martini Lounge" open Wednesday-Sunday features high-powered menu of steak and seafood favorites.

Cotton: 75 Arms Park Drive, Manchester; 622-5488. Feauring upscale American bistro food, entrees lean toward regional dishes that are seasonally inspired. Bar menu available.

Derryfield Restaurant & Lounge: 625 Mammoth Road, Manchester; 623-2880. All your favorites served in lounge/bar atmosphere on popular golf course. Frequent live music and other events.

Hog's Trough Saloon: 342 Lincoln St., Manchester; 627-1341. Features menu of hearty basics prepared without pretension (and reasonably priced). Best-sellers: Steak and chicken dishes. All breads baked fresh daily.

Hooters of Manchester: 21 Front St., Manchester. 222-9116. The national chain of restaurants renowned as much for its scenery as its food. Located in the Ramada Inn near Amoskeag Fishways. Nature watchers rejoice.

JD's Tavern: 700 Elm St. (Center of New Hampshire), Manchester; 621-9040. A good place to pretend you're in a much bigger city than Manchester. Upscale atmosphere, good food, slick presentation all around.

The Lantern: 2175 Candia Road, Manchester; 668-0131. Closed Mondays. Old-time Manchester favorite for prime rib. A trip back to the old days - safe and reliable.

Milltowne Grill: In the terminal, Manchester Airport; 625-0256. Convenient restaurant ready with menu of light pub fare or hearty meals, served fast for travellers making a flight. Worth trying even if you're not going anywhere.

Milly's Tavern: 500 Commercial St., Manchester; 625-4444. Brew pub with eight of its own beers, nice menu of dinner choices. Also one of the best stages in Manchester for bands on Fridays and Saturdays.

Puritan Backroom: 245 Daniel Webster Highway, Manchester; 669-6890. Serves lunch and dinner, late hours. A long-time Manchester tradition. Ask about their secret recipe chicken sauce.

Queen City Motor Inn Restaurant & Lounge: 140 Queen City Ave., Manchester; 666-0901. Other places come and go, but here's an enduring Manchester landmark that seems impervious to all trends.

Ruby Tuesdays: Mall of NH, Manchester; 669-8342. Chain restaurant with above-average offerings. All-you-can-eat salad bar daily. Outstanding ribs and friendly service.

Stage Door Cafe: 96 Hanover St., Manchester. 625-0810. Restaurant/lounge with performances or DJ's almost every night. Convenient for events at the Palace Theatre next door. Try the Irish stew in a bread bowl.

Strange Brew Tavern: 88 MarketSt., Manchester. 666-4292. More beers on tap than you can shake a stick at, but also serves hearty meals to go with all the suds.

T-Bones Great American Eatery: South River Road, Bedford; 641-6100. Late night menu available in bar every night. Long-term area favorite; customer "bill of rights" includes amendments such as this from 1986: "You must be served your ketchup before your fries."

T.R. Brennan's: 1037 Hanover St., Manchester; 623-9255. Recently remodelled and featuring an eclectic variety of steak, seafood, and family fare. New owner and chef Patty Brennan has made T.R. Brennan's daily specials board worth watching.

The Yard Seafood and Steakhouse: Junction of Mammoth Road and South Willow Street, Manchester; 623-3545. Open seven days. Big-time place for Sunday brunch. Open Monday-Friday for lunch.
