Albee's on Amherst: 36 Amherst St., Manchester; 623-6907. Favorite downtown lunch-time spot. Popular with area attorneys and other disreputable courthouse types. Great spot for a fast midday break.

Andy's Place: 342 Cypress St., Manchester; 645-1889. Closed Mondays. Tucked away in the streets near Elliot Hospital is one of the city's best-kept dining secrets. Known for their skillet breakfasts; for lunch there's often a line right out the door! Breakfast only on weekends.

Andre's Diner: 100 Willow St., Manchester; 623-8218. Closed on Sundays. Points for accuracy - actually Andre's "diner-style" restaurant. Out-of-the-way place popular with regulars.

Bagel Bin: 1100 Hooksett Rd., Hooksett; 644-8200.
Full selection of bagels, coffee, and treats, as well as a full breakfast menu, sandwiches ans soups.

Dani's Diner: 119A Hanover St., Manchester; 669-88928. Small downtown breakfast & lunch place with good food and a lot of heart.

Dunkin' Donuts: Everywhere in Manchester - drive or walk two minutes and you're bound to run into one. It's said that New Hampshire has more Dunkin' Donuts per capita than anywhere in the world, and the Queen City seems to be epicenter of it all. Tip: For the best chance for fresh donuts, head for outlet attached to the bakery on Eddy Road.

Fusion Internet Café & Espresso Bar: 967 Elm Street, Manchester; 647-4344. Located in downtown Manchester, Fusion offers a variety of coffees, espresso based drinks, frappes, juices, salads, Italian sandwiches and a large selection of home-style baked goods. Don’t forget it is one of the few wireless hotspots in the city, and the only place where you can have a glass of wine or a beer while surfing the net.

Greg's Place: 641 Elm St., Manchester; 622-4713. Located across the street from the arena. A good place for breakfast and/or lunch.

Jamie's Bakery/Cafe: 581 Second St., Manchester; 647-6560. New York-style neighborhood bakery in former home of Bagel Works still offers bagels, but a lot more - cannolis, sandwiches, wraps, pastries, and omelets on weekends.

Jewell & the Beanstalk: 793 Somerville St., Manchester; 624-3709. Quirky combination coffee shop/florist/salon offers light menu of breakfast and lunch items, including juice bar and vegetarian sandwiches.

Joe Kelly's: 866 Elm St., Manchester; 622-6400. Closed Sundays. Popular downtown lunch spot; offers fresh subs and salads. Best-seller: the steak & cheese.

Julien's Corner Kitchen: 150 Bridge St., Manchester; 622-4044. A cross between Grandma's kitchen and a country-style eatery with all homemade items. Open for breakfast and lunch.

Margie's Dream: 172 Hayward St., Manchester; 627-4922. Margie's gone but the family keeps going. A Manchester institution tucked into out-of-the-way neighborhood; location of frequent John Clayton sightings.

Merrimack Restaurant: 786 Elm St., Manchester; 669-5222. Queen City restaurant's well-worn booths are a comfortable gathering spot for the city's movers and shakers. Check out the pictures of Bill Clinton's many visits.

Moe's Italian Sub Shop: 1093 Elm St., Manchester; 623-6637. A new foot soldier among Manchester's army of sub shops. Never underestimate the Queen City's love for food in a roll.

Moe Joe Country Diner: 649 East Industrial Park Drive, Manchester; 641-2993. Features decadent homemade pastries, breakfast, and lunch; specials daily. Unusual specialty: Portuguese sweet bread.

Nadeau's Subs: Two locations: Bob's at 776 Mast Road (623-9315) and Jeremy and Danny, 100 Cahill Ave. (across from Home Depot, 669-7017). Home-grown Queen City two-store empire features top-of-the-line subs that keep 'em coming back for more. For serious sub connoisseurs; not for the faint of appetite. 

Post Office Fruit & Luncheonette: Corner of Amherst and Chestnut Streets, Manchester; no phone listing. Home to Effie and Kay Dovas, lunch counter veterans. Great coffee, plus home their brother's helium balloon concession. The place where everyone buys lottery tickets.

The Red Arrow: 61 Lowell St., Manchester; 626-1118. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. around-the-clock diner open since 1922; a Queen City landmark and magnet for night owls. Breakfast anytime, of course.

Sassafras: 90 Dow St., Manchester, 641-1862. A quirky little-known lunch spot in the mill district, specializing in soups and freshly-baked breads, deli meats, sandwiches and daily specials.

Shirley D's Truck Stop: Lower Elm St., Manchester; not in the phone book. Breakfast and lunch in unpretentious and unchanging environment; rock-bottom prices. Smoker-friendly dining room a haven for those with the urge to light up, though a new non-smoking area out back is proving popular. Surprising new development: the availability of Shirley D’s kitchen apparel and sportswear, complete with a retro-looking Shirley D’s logo.

Steve's House Restaurant: 1265 Elm St., Manchester; 669-5559. Open seven days 11 a.m. to 8:45 p.m., Sunday closes at 7:45 p.m. Low-profile place on upper Elm Street. Greek-flavored; like dining in a place you'd find on a side street in Thessaloniki.

Stuffed Sub: 1293 Elm St., Manchester; 622-9090. Open for lunch only. Small sandwich shop located in the northern reaches of downtown. Regulars love the bread.

Sub Contractors: 381 Kelley St., Manchester; 641-2121. West Side source of sub-sistence that wins raves from loyal customers.

Suddenly Susan's Deli & Wine Bar: 28 Hanover St., Manchester; 625-1850. Open weekdays for lunch. Vegetarian or not, Susan's sandwiches and salads are as diverse as their names are colorful. A stylish and attractive place with good lunchtime specials.

Suzie Q's: 280 North Main St., Manchester; 666-4882. Breakfast and lunch. Homey atmosphere, huge portions. Looks small on the outside but has large dining room in rear of building.

Tony's Grinders and Pizza: 542 Elm St., Manchester; 669-8337. Don't let the name fool you - the place offers a full line of specialties ranging from authentic French-Canadian poutine to award-winning chili. Open late after arena events; open very late (3 a.m.) on weekends. 

Union Leader Cafeteria: 100 William Loeb Drive, Manchester; 800-562-8218. Open business hours, or 24 hours a day if security lets you in. Watch the state's journalism elite select from a wide variety of vending machine delectables.

Vintage Cafe: 1117 Elm St., Manchester; 625-1010. Spiffy urban bistro in heart of reviving downtown. Some of the best food and most original decor in Manchester. Not just a breakfast and lunch place anymore - doing more in the evenings with live music.
