Making of a star
Sports teams, arts classes and more to help your kids shine
Compiled by Christina Nyquist & Amy Diaz news@hippopress.com
“Back to school” doesn’t just mean a new grade.
It also means a new season of afterschool activities — back to dance, back to art, back to Boy Scouts, back to soccer. Luckily for the kids of southern New Hampshire, there are oodles of activities to get involved in. Is your child a Broadway baby? A young Einstein? A peewee Picasso? No matter what his or her talent, there’s probably at least one organization ready to help his or her star shine a little brighter.

People: Home of a green tomorrow
By Brian Early bearly@hippopress.com
Steve Reddy, owner of Zetland Homes LLC, is building an environmental demonstration home in Loudon. It will be one of the first homes in the state to have the LEED (Leadership in Energy Environmental Design) rating. The home will be open to the public Oct. 6 to Oct. 8 and Oct. 13 to Oct. 14 in the Parade of Homes from the New Hampshire Homebuilders Association. The structure of the home is similar to many homes built today, but it is full of energy-efficient touches. Pictures are available at www.zetlandparade.com.

Art: Art in the fresh air
By Heidi Masek hmasek@hippopress.com
Here’s a deal: buy a raffle ticket and win artwork worth a thousand dollars or so.
It could happen. The art raffle is one of the popular parts of the Manchester Artists Association Art in the Park, now in its ninth year. The two-day art show is now run in conjunction with the third Bel Esprit Arts and Cultural Event, which was started as an umbrella to the MAA art show and Mill City Festival.

Food: The buzz about peach fuzz
By Lisa Brown lbrown@hippopress.com
You can’t judge a peach by its fuzz.
“The ones in the northeast seem to be fuzzier than the ones down south, and why? I wouldn’t be able to guess,” said Rob Larocque, farmer and owner of Carter Hill Orchard in Concord.

Longshots: The race is on as baseball enters September
by Dave Long
Who in the name of Bowie Kuhn came up with the idea to place the latest apocalyptic Yankee-Red Sox series dead center in the black hole of my deadline? It means the series starts after I write this and is halfway done by the time most folks see this column, sometime around the fifth inning on Wednesday. Grrrrr! It’s going to make me go out on a limb to mix in a series of predictions for what has happened amid the other baseball thoughts I’ve got today as the pennant race enters the final month.

Techie: Woody gadgets
By John “jaQ” Andrews jandrews@hippopress.com
Maybe you’re read too much about the supposed health hazards of plastic cutting boards. Maybe you’re a baseball purist. Maybe your first car was a station wagon with that inimitable, natural accent.
Wood grain.
