Fighting hunger in New Hampshire

On Nov. 30, the New York Times featured New Hampshire’s food bank in a story about food shortages.

The plight of New Hampshire Food Bank caught the attention of musicians Stefan Lessard, the bassist from the Dave Matthews Band; Ed Robertson of Barenaked Ladies, and Adam Gardner of Guster. They will perform together as Yukon Kornelius in Vermont to benefit the New Hampshire and Vermont food banks in January.

Joe Biden, a Democratic presidential hopeful, is Delaware’s longest-serving senator, having taken office in 1973 at age 30 and been reelected five times, most recently in 2002. He chairs the foreign relations committee in the Senate and is a member of the judiciary committee. Biden also ran for president in 1988 but eventually lost the nomination to former Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis. Biden spoke to the Hippo by phone from Iowa, where he was campaigning.

It takes some exploration to find Lucia’s Portuguese Bakery in Nashua.

But it is worth the trip down Temple Street to the narrow, one-way Scripture Street for the authentic Portuguese rolls, sweet bread and other delights, especially for anyone who has only tasted what is found at the larger grocery store chains. This is the real thing.
