Do-it-yourself Valentines
How to pull together a little romances
By Hippo Staff news@hippopress.com

Ah, love ? it?s so delightful, so exciting, so ? expensive.

True, when you?re hot and heavy with someone, a cost-free walk in the park can be divine. But whether you?ve just met someone new or you?re still atwitter after 25 years of marriage, occasionally you just want to create an evening of extra special romance for your beloved. And that can get a little pricey.

People: Playing Lincoln
by John "jaQ" Andrews jandrews@hippopress.com

Retired for three years from a career as a forestry educator at UNH, Steve Wood now makes a living of playing Abraham Lincoln. He?s member number 118 of the nationwide Association of Lincoln Presenters, the only member in New Hampshire. Wood specializes in anecdotes about Lincoln?s travels to New England, especially his stops in Concord, Manchester, Exeter and Dover, N.H. He stays in character until the end of his presentations, when he speaks about Lincoln?s life and entertains questions. He appears at the Brookline Public Library at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 and the Amherst Town Library at 7 p.m. Feb. 13.

Theater: Family affair
By Heidi Masek hmasek@hippopress.com

New Hampshire?s northern thespians extended an invite to their southern counterparts at the fifth New Hampshire Theatre Awards Friday, Feb. 2, at the Palace Theatre in Manchester. And, judging by the awards, they might have a point.

Food: The luxury of osso bucco
By Susan Reilly news@hippopress.com

Osso bucco, translated literally, means bone hole.

It is one of those dishes that seem harder to make than they really are, and once you have done it, it will become part of your repertoire.

Longshots: Talking a good game ahead on all-sports WGAM
by Dave Long

When you start a new radio program you want to do it with a bang. That?s why I picked Devin Hester to be MVP of the Super Bowl during my (plug, plug) inaugural broadcast on WGAM. And a scant 14 seconds into the game I was already ready to say ?I told you so? after Hester ran back the opening kick-off for a TD. Alas it wasn?t to be, as after Tony Dungy made one of the great (or was it the most obvious) coaching adjustments in Super Bowl history Hester never laid a glove on the ball again, and QB Rex Grossman did ? with decidedly less success. Oh well, just have to dazzle them with something else.

Techie: Watch this
by John "jaQ" Andrews jandrews@hippopress.com

I thought I was so cool a couple years ago when I got a watch that doubled as a USB flash drive.

There was a short little USB cable built right into the rubber wristband, and I could hook it up to my computer to store up to 128MB of whatever right there. This was secret agent stuff.
