Mall or bust
By John "jaQ" Andrews jandrews@hippopress.com
Admit it. You shop at the mall.
It may be uncool, in that it’s-pushed-on-us-as-cool-so-it-must-be-uncool kind of way, but somebody’s filling up those acres of parking spaces. Even if it’s only when you curse the insipid consumerism of it all in December, you can’t steer clear of the mall.
And why should you? Surely you’d much rather support locally owned businesses, but are malls really all that bad? Are national chains and property management groups inseparable from the quality known as “evil”?
Some people don’t think so. And they’re not tweenaged, gum-smacking, cell-phone-gossipping mallrats either.

She’s preparing with a number of other area residents with the Massachusetts chapter of the society’s Team In Training program (www.teamintraining.org), which helps athletes with both their fundraising and physical training.

Longshots: Word of the wise gets lost in sports translation
by Dave Long
I think having an imaginative vocabulary is cool—no, make that captivating. It’s why, even though he generally was the very same boorish dolt he often described Maxwell Q. Klinger as, I enjoyed snobby Charles Emerson Winchester much more than loutish Frank Burns, who he followed on the great television series M*A*S*H.

Food: Vacation on a plate
By Susan Reilly news@hippopress.com
For some people, the heat of summer means fried clams and lobster rolls.
People lined up in front of beach side shacks are not waiting for chicken tenders and hamburgers, but white hotdog buns filled with lobster meat lightly mixed with mayonnaise or fried clams served with a side of coleslaw and tarter sauce.

I will say this: though Marion Nestle takes some of the fun out of food she has the good sense to leave cheese alone.

Games: Prey
By Glenn Given production@hippopress.com
Human Head turns the first-person shooter genre on its ear by doing just that; turning everything sideways. Yay, it’s annoying!
