Big loud summer
A guide to summer music festivals
By Brian Early bearly@hippopress.com

Summer is the season for music festivals.

In Manchester, the big outdoor festival is this weekend’s Eighth Annual Manchester Jazz & Blues Festival to benefit the Palace Theatre. But the summer of music doesn’t stop there — head north some weekend this summer and you might hear blues or folk. And save the date in July for the Lowell Folk Festival. Like everything else in New England in the summer, the sounds head outdoors and there are plenty of opportunities to catch a line-up that will be music to your ears.

Arts: Helping hand
By Heidi Masek hmasek@hippopress.com

Grants are a big part of how arts organizations keep doing what they do. The National Endowment for the Arts sent a total of $844,800 in grant funding to New Hampshire for fiscal year 2008. Most goes to the state’s Council on the Arts, which uses that and state appropriations to fund a variety of grants to New Hampshire artists and arts organizations.

Techie: Free energy

Sun!

It’s not only a welcome friend after a persistent winter. It’s also a power source, loved by gadget nerds who also occasionally go outside. ‘Cuz really, if we can’t use our laptops in the park, we might not go to the park.
