Archie Bronson Outfit, Derdang Derdang
Domino Records, 2006
Bronson's idea of a productive band practice must be one in which the other members grant him plenty of time to indulge in those fugue states guitarists drift into once per rehearsal, the deal where they stare blankly into the other dudes' eyes while repeating simple-stupid riffs at the top of their amp's lungs until someone stares back and kindly requests that they shut up, right now. A one-man wall of sound, this guy, taking Franz Ferdinand to its brattiest possible level, overcooking Zeppelin III stomp and topping it off with David Byrne vocal catatonics and Gang of Four changeups. Bronson's study of early Clash knuckleheadology took a weird left turn somewhere, judging from the surprisingly workable na-na-nas that carry "Kink," and all at once you're having such a cool time checking out his stolen-for-mankind's-betterment booty that you begin dreading the inevitable cooties moment when he bawls into his Jolt over the unworthy Dentyne-popping bitch who screwed him up, but it turns out "Modern Lovers" is a feedback-skronking rant about how straight love is what screws all of us up, with its Groundhog Day repetition of carefully prepared eggs and no sex for breakfast, at which point you twist your inner Rubik's Cube this way and that hoping to figure out how to get your buddy to allow you to blare the record in peace.
