Augie March, Moo You Bloody Choir
Sony Records/Red Intl, 2007
Glenn Richards shocked me into a messy intestinal spasm when he nonchalantly admitted during our recent interview that his Augie March mates didn’t bring their A-game for this album and that he’s already trying to forget about it. Punchline is that the record doesn’t hit U.S. stores until 8/7/07. Now that’s punk, boys and girls. Learn from it. The Pitchfork Media dweebs (who surely must suffer as much as their readers by having to scrape together 1000 words per album, for Pete’s sake) are all over Richards’ amazingly literate turns of phrase, but let’s face it, if your voice is a dead ringer for Dylan you’re ill-advised to swipe from Twisted Sister. So, as usual, ignore Pitchfork’s unreadable babbling and buy this one for the music, which is terrific wherever you turn. The songs roll and strut and energize the listener, suggestive of a Dylan who’d grown up listening to Spoon and other indie-rock name-drops that are sneaky Pitchforkian ways of saying “Holy crow is this groovy.” Fans of folk/Americana who like goosing their buddies with a few loud chords will gold-frame this.
