Darsombra, Ecdysis Among other things, Meatjack guitarist Brian Daniloski’s one-man take on doomy ambience is dimensioned in eerily accessible lo-fi background fuzziness (lunkheads yelling at each other, bassy hearing-test patterns), Sabbath power chords and screeched philharmonics, some qualities of which may sound suspiciously Sunn0)))-like to rock completists trying to wrap their heads around the resistance movement’s sudden, perplexing need for mollusk-metal soundscaping. True, Sunn0))) has become the de facto overlord of dread-noise owing to years of bullheadedness and a few gift reviews from big-time pundits, but above anything else they’ve opened the floodgates for projects like this. Daniloski’s Petri dish teems with even spookier stuff than the hell-in-a-jar smog that’s become drive-thru nowadays: “Drag the Carcass” incorporates competing layers of street-preacher kookerie and the thrum of a bad patch cord in Daniloski’s setup to underscore a sand-washed Middle Eastern dirge, while the show-stopper is “Dies Irae,” an appropriately disturbing snapshot of Kubrick’s The Shining, replete with shifting ghost voices and a foreboding, Marshallized version of the chords from the movie’s opening sequence.
