Leigh Nash, Wishing For This You'll recognize Nash from her work with Sixpence None the Richer, whose "Kiss Me" supercharged more roller-rink hormones than the belly shirt. Not that she's into workaholism anymore, but after taking a couple of years off after SNTR's breakup, she's followed up her infinitely pleasant Blue On Blue album of earlier this year with this iTunes-only set of seven Christmas songs, again tilling infinitely pleasant ground after an alt-country/roller-rink-hormonal fashion. Nash's pinched Lisa Loeb tonality is a bit shaky on "Baby It's Cold Outside," a duet with Gabe Dixon, but she's a dead-bang fit for George Michael's '80s monstrosity "Last Christmas," which is too cutie-pie '90s to despise. Apart from those and the hateful "O Holy Night" (hateful only because everyone has one or two instantly Grinch-ifying, most-hated Christmas songs, so bands thinking of covering that song ? or worse, "Feliz Navidad" ? well, there be no shelter here), the songs lean toward the obscure. Her own cello-driven title track is about as much a downer as Chrissie Hynde's "2000 Miles," Nash's heroine honking her Kleenex about emotional rather than physical distance. B ? Eric W. Saeger |
